Inherited from Middle Persian 𐭥𐭩𐭧𐭲𐭭 (ʿyḥtn /⁠rēxtan⁠/), from Proto-Iranian *Hraič- (to pour; to flow), an Iranian-specific suffixed form of Proto-Indo-Iranian *HriHyáti (to flow).[1]

  1. (transitive) to pour; to spill; to sprinkle
    چای ریختنčây rixtanto pour tea
    خون ریختنxun rixtanto spill blood
    گل ریختندgol rixtanto sprinkle flowers
    • c. 1060, Nāṣir-i Khusraw, Safarnāma [Book of Travels]‎[1]:
      بر سر آن چشمه گرمابه‌ای ساخته‌اند و آبش چنان گرم‌ست که تا به آب سرد نیامیزند بر خود نتوان ریخت، و گویند آن گرمابه سلیمان بن داوود علیه السلام ساخته است.
      bar sar-i ān čašma garmāba'ē sāxta-and u āb-aš čunān garm ast ki tā ba āb-i sard nay-āmēzand bar xwad na-tawān rēxt, u gūyand ān garmāba sulaymān ben-e dāwūd alayhi-s-salām sāxta ast.
      Above this spring, there is a bathhouse. Its water is so hot that one cannot pour it until one has diluted it with cold water. They say that the bathhouse was built by Solomon, son of David, peace be upon him.
