Inherited from Vulgar Latin *sūbilāre, from Latin sībilāre, present active infinitive of sībilō, or possibly influenced by fluiera. Compare Aromanian shuir, shuirari, Dalmatian sublar, Italian sobillare, Romansch tschüblar, dialectal French subler, Ligurian šwirá (attested in Rovegno), Ladin šüré.
