Early life

edit

I was born on 15 May 1999 in Chhapra to Bhumihar Brahmin parents. My family came from a lineage of teachers, which is why in spite of not being well-off, we always believed our mind to be our true wealth, one that can never be taken away from us and shall always feed us no matter what the situation may be.

At the age of one, our family shifted to Delhi, where we have resided to this day. It was here that I completed my education from playschool to my master's.

Education

edit

Primary and middle school

edit

I started my schooling a little late. I was intended to join my sister at Sardar Patel Vidyalaya. However, my admission was rejected for being left-handed. Eventually, I was admitted to Delhi Public School, East of Kailash, one of the two primary school branches of Delhi Publics School, R.K. Puram.

Although I was always interested in reading and writing from an early age, I was never particularly fond of school. I was never able to stick to a curriculum, I was very forgetful and would thus often forget to do my homework or bring materials for art and craft activities, I was body-shamed, and often faced racist remarks for being a Bihari, particularly from the wealthier Punjabi students. It did not help that my parents never allowed me to indulge in "immoral activities" like hanging out with my classmates outside of school, watch films, play games, be in a relationship, or generally do anything that the other students in my school did, thereby distancing me even more from them. As a coping mechanism to cover up my loneliness, I developed the habit of talking to myself.

I had never seen internet until I was ten years old, and we had television at our house when I was eight years old. So most of my childhood was spent without them. Since I lived in a filthy ghetto close to a busy road, my parents did not want me to go out outside without supervision either. So I did not have much to do during my childhood. In my spare time, I would write stories and make comics, most notably fan fiction on Sonic the Hedgehog, a character I did not know much about at the time and yet found very appealing.

Secondary and senior secondary

edit

When I was in tenth standard, I befriended one of my enemies from middle school, along with a student who had joined our school a year before. Although I did have many good friends in school, what made the friendship of three of us so special was that we were all outcasts. No one else was our friend, and thus we shared a bond unaltered by any other person. They were the last friends I ever had at school.

From the next year, I went into depression, after I began studying for the Joint Entrance Exam against my will. My interest was always in creativity and fantasy. The only reason I had opted for the science stream was because of computer science. I was really interested in programming, particularly C++, because I wanted to develop video games based on stories I wrote in my spare time. However, once I learnt that the computer science taught in Indian schools is a waste of time, I lost all the interest I had in it.

At that point, my only source of emotion was a novel that I was writing with my friends, called ATG: Crosso Chronicles.[4][5] This, however, had to also be put on halt after my mother discovered I had been writing the book instead of spending all my time studying as I was expected to do. At this point, I had to give up everything I enjoyed. If I were to ever say the worst time of my life is to be chosen, I could consider this to be the one.

The year of nothingness

edit

After graduating from school, I did not manage to get admission in any college of my choice. I saw my wealthy classmates getting into international universities, while the bookworms got admission in the institutes of national importance. This embarrassed me even further, and I decided that I would rather drop a year and study hard to get admission in one of the premier government universities rather than going to a private college.

From then on, since I had nothing else to do, I decided to spend an entire year studying. Although my mother had become more lenient on me at this point, allowing me to play games and watch TV, my father had become even more strict and controlling. He would force me to study all the time, and try to humiliate me by telling me what all his friends' children, who are my age, are doing.

The efforts proved to be fruitful, as I gave the entrance examination the next year and scored an All India Rank (AIR) 173. This was a rare moment in my life when my efforts actually yielded fruitful results. To this day, my father has never compared me with any of his friends' children. In this duration, I also began reading books on a Kindle Paperwhite that I received as a birthday present. It helped me reconnect with my passion of reading, something that has remained ever since. With my rank, I took admission in Delhi Technological University.

Bachelor's degree

edit

My days of completing my bachelor's degree were what I consider to be the best days of my life, particularly the first year. I was the highest rank holder from the state, which gave me immense popularity at college. I had decided to abandon my outcast image that had been a part of me during school, and turn a fresh page on life. I made friends with all circles, and learnt a lot of things about life. Since I had been an outcast in school, I did not know how to behave socially, and thus had a lot to catch up which I was fortunately able to do in these four years.

However, not everything was smooth sailing. For one, I became too overconfident because of my AIR 173, due to which I stopped paying attention to my studies. Consequently, my academic performance fell drastically in the second semester itself. While I was catching up on how to behave like a socially acceptable person, everyone else had already moved on to learning how to get a job. This was something that came back to haunt me and has been doing so to this date. While everyone else was opting for elective subjects that were to help them later in life, I was choosing the ones I enjoyed doing. When everyone figured how to write job applications to big companies, I was still volunteering for the department. At an age when everyone learns to live alone, I was still being protected by my parents, who still treated me like a child.

Eventually, the COVID-19 pandemic came over. Our college was shut down, and no companies were to come for the on-campus placement. All the students had to find a job on their own using the skill set they acquired during these four years. And since I had none, I could not apply to any major company. While my CGPA improved during the lockdown and I even interned at many companies, I could not get hired for a major company like the rest of my peers. I was offered the position of a content writer at a consultancy firm, I underestimated what I was receiving and declined the offer, choosing to do a master's degree instead. I wanted to do a master's degree in Europe, but my father decided that while I do not have anything else to do, I should start doing a master's degree from my own university instead. Even though I refused to do it, my father forced me into doing it, thinking that even if my admission gets rejected from the universities I wished to study in, at least I will still have something in my hands. Listening to him was the biggest mistake of my life.

Master's degree

edit

As good as my days of completing my bachelor's degree were, my days of completing my master's degree were just as horrible. I was ashamed, and had a sense of humiliation in going to the same university that I had done my bachelor's from. Everyone who came to pursue a master's degree in the university had done their bachelor's from colleges that were not reputable or unheard of. I had scored an AIR 419 in the Common Entrance Examination for Design, which was much higher than all my other batchmates, giving me an extra feeling of not fitting in the group. I felt as if the lecturers who knew me must be thinking I am a failure who could not even get a job, and is now wasting time here.

To add insult to the injury, my bachelor's degree could not get printed due to a technical glitch, and I had to return from my convocation empty-handed. My batchmates from bachelor's had also learnt that I am doing a master's degree from the university, making me feel like I had been stripped naked publicly. I had another depression, this time even worse than the one I had from senior secondary school. Even to this day I have never forgiven my father for his decision. If my admission had been rejected from the universities I wished to attend, I could have at least learnt from my mistakes and applied next year, or the year after that. But now I had only one year to apply for all the universities in all the countries. I had to learn about the requirements, create a portfolio, get the language certificates, write the letters of recommendation and statements of intent, and hope that I get all of this right in the first attempt.

As expected, my application was rejected, and I had no choice but to complete my master's degree from the university that I had grown to hate at this point. Since I wasted so much time applying for all the colleges and improving my portfolio with various artistic works, I did not have time to focus on my academic performance. As a result, I began tanking in it too. To further add insult to the injury, I did not get even a decent internship during this period. So I would not even say this was all for nothing, but rather it was all to make things even worse than what they could have been.

Career

edit

Cartoonist at Bakarmax (September 2020 - February 2021)

edit

My first internship was at a webcomic company called Bakarmax. An unknown startup company at the time I joined it, they featured on the first season of Shark Tank India.[6] The CEO of the company, Sumit Kumar,[7] was called as a guest lecturer at a workshop held in our college. As the final activity in the workshop, each person had to pitch a story to make a webcomic on it. In the end, my story was the most appreciated, and that began my first ever internship as a cartoonist.

The story that was chosen was of Sinky,[8] an accidental superhero who wanted to get his invention evaluated by the AIRD (the institute from Enthiran, which I did not know back then was not real), but ends up failing miserably. My inspiration behind the character was a physics question on kinetic energy in a spring, over what conditions a pair of springs under someone's shoes should be such that they survive a fall from a ten-storey building.

First, I made drawings were all made on paper with a pencil, then traced with a marker and then the pencil lines were erased. After this, the pages were scanned to put them on the digital platform, so that the panels can be put in GIMP and then given a threshold to reduce them to black lines on white background, without any of the paper texture which came in the scan. Finally, I coloured the panels.

The webcomic was finally put up on the website on 10 March 2021, where it has remained to this day.

Research assistant at IISc, Bangalore (August 2021 - September 2021)

edit

My second internship had been at the Indian Institute of Science as a research assistant under Professor B. Gurumoorthy,[9] who worked at the mechanical department of the university. I had to write an academic paper on products that have been invented in and are used exclusively in India. Since the coronavirus pandemic was still at large during the time, my meetings used to take place online.

The paper was a part of a much bigger scientific magazine. My work was a succession of someone else's work, and after my internship was complete, my research was continued by someone else. While I was proud of having done an internship in one of, if not the greatest university of India, in the long run, this internship did not help me anywhere in future. It only existed to be mentioned as a trivia in my curriculum vitae, but nothing more beyond that.

Graphic designer at Microland (December 2021 - February 2022)

edit

This was my third and final internship as a bachelor's student. The position was not needed, and I had a walk-in interview where I pitched the need for Microland to have a graphic designer. In our final semester, we had to prepare a thesis on the basis of the works that we did during our time at the final internship. It was either that or a self-sponsored project. The former had more scope, as I could also get a pre-placement offer. However, the company was not able to offer me many works, and I had no choice but to end my internship after two months of barely doing anything.

Some of the works that were given to me included designing desktop wallpapers, banners for email and posters for upcoming events, and arranging database in an organised format. Since the works that were being given to me were short of what I was expected to showcase at the end of my semester, I felt it best to depart from the internship and focus on a self-sponsored project, where I had more liberty and control. It was during this time that I made the basic mechanism and story for my game, The Fabulous World of Whirly. The game, however, was abandoned as soon as I completed my thesis.

UX designer at Titan Company (September 2022 - December 2022)

edit

Titan Company was the first company in which I did my internship as a master's student. Everyone in my class was offered the internship, in which we were given multiple topics to work over. I was partnered with another student, who was very irregular, thus forcing me to do the majority of the heavylifting.

For the internship, we made the prototype for a mobile application that allowed the user to discard single-use plastic waste and get rewarded for doing the same. The app was never completely developed, as our internship ended before we could finish the project. This was the first time I had ever used Figma, having completely abandoned Adobe XD after this.

Game designer at Red Panda Games (July 2023 - August 2024)

edit

My final internship ever was at a start-up company called Red Panda Games. While I was hired on a false promise of exaggerated payment, I still worked for it because I needed something to show for my design project. The company was working on a real-time strategy mobile game, which just by looking I could tell was going to be a colossal failure. I did not say it out loud however, since I was only there to fill something up on my resume and to get free money.

Even after my design project was done, I still held onto it as I thought the game is about to be complete, and I will have my name in the credits of one game. However, even when I got my job after my master's was complete, the game was still in the development stage. I received a job, and left the internship.

While the project I was working on might not have been good enough, I learnt plenty of things from the internship, such as certain tools in Unity 3D, and GitHub Desktop. However, since I finished my internship here, I have never used Unity ever again and switched to Godot Engine instead.

Assistant professor at College of Art, Delhi (August 2024 - present)

edit

Presently, I am working as a part-time lecturer of visual communication at College of Art, Delhi. I have to go one week a month to teach the final-year students. While it seems low, as is the payment, I am able to use this time to study for the Civil Services Examination. Since I have also grown a tumour in my right foot, it gives me enough time to heal myself.

Other than this, it also gives me time to try all the personal projects I have ever wanted to explore, including making YouTube videos, developing indie games, live streaming, animation and learning languages.

Personal life

edit

Currently, I live with my parents and my pet cockatiel, Hero. I don't earn much from my lectureship, which is why my mother forced me to prepare for the Civil Services Examination. She constantly surveils everything I do, say or even think. Due to this, I have given up all my interests.

My only real source of entertainment for now is reading articles on Wikipedia and discovering new topics that I find fun enough to study. I have a lot to read for the exam too, which is why I never get bored. I have an Amazon Prime subscription, so I watch TV shows and movies whenever I come to the dining room to eat.

Political views

edit

While preparing for the Civil Services Examination, I had the fortune of reading in depth about Indian history and political science. This has led me into holding certain beliefs that may sound controversial to an ordinary Indian.

India should annex Myanmar

edit

The iron is hot. India should strike the hammer by annexing Chin, Rakhine, Kachin and Sagaing, which are fighting against the current Burmese junta government.

I don't mean we should invade it the way Russia has invaded Ukraine, but more like how Sardar Patel did with Hyderabad and Junagadh. The militant commanders of all these states should be offered to be made the first Chief Ministers of the states once they join the union. BJP and Congress should also ally with them to make their loyalty towards India stronger, like how northeast regional parties do.

Advantages of doing this

edit
  1. The separatist movements in northeast states will be reduced drastically. Their decades of pre-existing propaganda will take far longer to be undone. For example, the NSCN which wants to be a part of Sagaing will no longer have ask for independence from India and Myanmar. We can redraw the maps of Nagaland and Sagaing so that this issue gets resolved. Same goes for Zomi Revolutionary Army, who will have nothing to fight for if Manipur and Chin are in the same country. Good luck explaining to all the people you've brainwashed for decades that now you want an entire nation on your own even when it's not realistically possible anymore.
  2. India will surround Bangladesh from all sides, thereby having complete land access and also both sides of the maritime border, therefore monopoly over it. For example, Bangladesh won't be a part of Belt and Road Initiative anymore. It could be a start to making Bangladesh a puppet state for India just like Bhutan.
  3. Cheaper trade route to ASEAN countries. It will not just be closer, but also built over Myanmar's efforts.
  4. The people who are currently fighting for freedom in these regions will get to live in a country whose constitution guarantees socialist, secular, democratic and fraternal principles rather than one country that gets a military coup every other decade.
  5. Because of this, they will show more loyalty towards the union, making it harder for any Burmese separatist activities from trying to undo the annexation. After all, if they don't want to be in the country when they are in it, what will make them want to go back?
  6. Rohingya Muslims finally get to not longer remain stateless.
  7. Many of the armed militant groups are already present, which can serve as new regiments for the Indian Army.
  8. The elephant in the room - India will become bigger.

Countering arguments against the opinion

edit
  1. It will be very expensive: Not as much as annexing territories in a war. India has done this before with Hyderabad, Junagadh and Manipur before, back when there was no money and the nation was war-torn. Now India has the fifth highest nominal GDP in the world. The government can pump as much money as it wants to for getting this operation to happen.
  2. It's high risk and low reward: There is a lot of scope in tourism, agriculture, industries and fishery. The land is not barren. It is a tropical land being taken from the works of another country that has already built on it, and will later be in the hands of the state governments ruled by those who were previously the heads of the separatist movements.
  3. Our own democracy is not perfect. So why should we share it with them?: According to The Economist Democracy Index, Myanmar is the second worst country in the world, only above Afghanistan. Even North Korea and sub-Saharan African countries are more democratic than it. Our democracy may not be perfect, but at least it is better than what they already have.
  4. But Modi's India is failing too: Putting political bias aside, tell me. Is Modi going to be around forever? These states will be a part of India years after Modi is gone. Just because you dislike the current government does not mean you should throw away the opportunity completely.
  5. These new states will also have separatists: If the current separatists will get the ministries in the states, who is going to be the separatist? Sure Myanmar could prop up some new ones to create insurgency, but the current separatists are more powerful than the Burmese government itself. The Burmese government can't plant separatists stronger than themselves.
  6. What will the world say?: Tell me, whose side will the world take? India, a diplomatically neutral democracy or Myanmar, a Chinese lapdog whose president's name you don't even know? Especially at a time when the war in Ukraine and Palestine are going on, they won't be able to care less about some junta losing land.
  7. But what about China?: China's only problem will be that there will be less land to be a part of BRI. But that doesn't matter, because the only reason China would want BRI in that land is to reach Bangladesh, and as mentioned in point 2 of advantages, Bangladesh will no longer be able to join it.
  8. Wouldn't they be empathetic towards Myanmar because of their cultural identity?: Quite the contrary. Just like India, Myanmar is also a very diverse country. All the four regions I mentioned have different religious compositions (Chin is 91.5% Christian, Kachin is 64% Buddhist and 34% Christian, Sagaing is 92% Buddhist, and Rakhine is 63% Buddhist and 35% Muslim). They have various ethnicity. In fact, I don't think they have anything in common other than the language. And I believe having one language for all four states will be advantageous.

All Indian subdivisions should have a flag

edit

Almost all the countries around the world have flags for their first level subdivisions. Many have it for their second level subdivisions, and some even have it for their third subdivision. It is time for India to also have the same.

Why Indian subdivisions currently do not have flags

edit

During independence, the princely states had to be united into the country, thereby eliminating all their previously existing symbols to prevent any form of loyalty towards them. This included their flags and coats of arms. Instead of state flags, all the states were given government banners, which are basically state emblems slapped on a white background.

When states do not have flags, any further subdivision like districts or metropolitan areas are a far cry.

Why Indian subdivisions should have flags

edit
  1. Diversity: India is a very diverse country. Each flag can be an ample representation of the place. This has been seen in many countries such as Russia, Germany, the United States or Japan.
  2. Territorial marking: While travelling in a train or by road, one can understand which subdivision they are in.
  3. Federalism: Every federal country around the world has flags for subdivisions.
  4. Vexillogy: More design is always good and cool-looking. It might even encourage more and better designs in future.
  5. Acceptance of diversity: One argument that I have constantly seen against state flags is that it will cause division in India, as if the moment state flags get revealed, everyone will run out of their houses swinging their flags and do...something, I guess? But anyway, after some time, people will get immune to the fact that every state has a flag, just like how they have grown immune to the fact that every state has an emblem, anthem, day and other state symbols.
  6. Representation in parliament: There are numerous scripts in India, so writing the names of which place the elected representatives represent in Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha and Vidhan Sabha cannot be done by text. Instead, it should be done by a flag. This will also add a psychological burden of representation, making the politician realise their actions are how they are representing their subdivision.

Design of the flags

edit
  • State flags: The flags should be in a pennon shape, similar to the flag of Nepal. Like how the Nepalese flag has two emblems in the hoist side, the state flags shall also have two emblems in them, a smaller Ashoka Chakra on the top and a larger state emblem on the bottom. The flag shall have two to three colours:
    • One colour shall be the body of the flag
    • One colour should be for the emblems
    • An optional colour shall outline the pennon. It can be the same colour as the emblems too.
  • MP constituency flags: The flags shall be triangular in shape, similar to the Nishan Sahib. In the middle, there shall be the emblem of the state. The flags will have two colours with one being the border similar to the state flag, and using their permutations and combinations they can use all their colours for all their districts. The maximum are in Uttar Pradesh which is 80, so only a diversity of 10 colours is required (it can be done as the seven colours of the rainbow plus black, white and grey).
  • MLA constituency flags: Similar to the MP constituency flag, except the shape shall be an isosceles triangle, similar to the flag of the Dhenkanal State. Here, however, more permutations and combinations will be needed since they are more. Uttar Pradesh has the most here too with 403 MLA constituencies, so a diversity of 20 colours will be needed.
  • City flags: These ones are the simplest. Just make a square flag with the emblem of the city in the middle. Basically just call New Delhi's seal a flag and implement it everywhere.

India should abolish the death penalty

edit

Death penalty is a capital punishment that has been carried out in the Indian subcontinent since the ancient times. While its origins are unknown, it grew to prominence during the rule of the Nanda dynasty in Magadha, and has been in practice ever since, with occasional reduction in usage or outright abandonment at times, as was seen during the rule of Jalal-ud-Din Khalji.

There are two reasons why death penalty is considered a suitable form of capital punishment.

  1. It generates fear in the minds of the citizens, making them realise they could meet a similar fate if they commit such a crime.
  2. It gives the citizens satisfaction to know that a person who committed a heinous crime was brutally punished for it.

However, both these points are only valid when the execution is carried out in public and either looks or feels painful. In the current executions carried out in India, however, both these conditions are unfulfilled. The death row convict is executed swiftly and painlessly in private, thereby negating the whole point behind a death penalty, only resulting in the loss of a human life.

The purpose behind justice should be to reform the criminal rather than to punish them. Countries that follow this philosophy have lower crime rates (eg. Norway, Ireland, Denmark, Canada etc). Therefore, I believe India should also abolish the death penalty.
