English: An under-structure worn beneath the skirt, giving the skirt a voluminous shape. Typically made from a series of parallel rings, supported by equidistant points. Originating in Spain in the 1470s, it remained a part of european fashion until the early 17th century. The fashionable shapes of the hoop cages and used materials varied with time and location. Some similar shapes were also achieved by a padded roll.
- Bell shapes were present in early spanish Verdugados. The padded Weiberspeck can also produce a bell-shaped silhouette.
- Cone shapes developed from earlier forms in Spain in the 16th century as Verdugado (Spanish farthingale).
- Drum shapes developed in France as Vertugadin (French farthingale or Wheel farthingale)
- Oval shapes appeared as late stages of the Verdugado in Spain. Panniers, producing a similar effect specifically to the sides, came into fashion in the early 18th century.
