An effort to recall Michael Nofs, a member of the Republican Party, from his elected position representing District 19 in the Michigan State Senate was launched in May 2011.[1] It did not make it to the ballot.
Nofs was re-elected in 2010, defeating Democrat Brenda Abbey in the November 2, 2010 general election.
The official recall language states:
"On May 12, 2011 Senator Mike L. Nofs did vote in favor of HB 4361 (S-5) which will grant a tax reduction of up to 1.8 BILLION DOLLARS per year to Michigan businesses while at the same time imposing an estimated 330 MILLION DOLLARS in new taxes upon the pensions of Michigan residents. His vote also reduced the earned income tax credit provided to some working families by 66%."[2]
Path to the ballot
Organizers had to turn in valid signatures equal to 25% of the ballots cast for the Governor in the most recent election in the district where the recall would have taken place. According to Calhoun County clerk Anne Norlander, about 18,300 signatures would have been necessary to put the recall on the November 2011 ballot.
The Calhoun County Election Commission met on June 3 to determine if the recall language was sufficient.[2] The Commission approved the language, but Nofs appealed the ruling in Calhoun County Circuit Court, arguing that the language was unclear and that they were not allowed enough time to defend their argument against the wording.[3]
