|I am a 34 year resident of Boulder, Colorado, recently retired from a nearly 40 year career in high tech - software engineering, software engineering management, and program management. I am an avid bicyclist, cross country skier and whitewater kayaker. I am married, with no children. I have a passion for reading, and my taste in literature leans towards history, science, and politics. I stay up on current events via the web, mainly national newspapers.
- I am standing up against the leftward lurch of our Democrat dominated State Govt, and believe that dialogue, and checks and balances, are the best process for better government
- My conservative principles are limited government, rule of law, civil liberties, and free markets, and I will use them in my role as a legislator.
- I will work hard to serve the needs of the voters in my district.
Community Safety- Support for law enforcement, holding lawbreakers accountable. Criminal justice reform doe not mean wholesale release of suspects without bail.
Education - We need more school choice and charter schools, as well as more parental involvement in their children's education, especially in low income areas and communities of color.
Taxes - I will support and defend the Taxpayer Bill of Rights amendment, the Gallagher amendment, which keep our taxes low, and support the 2020 ballot issue that lowers taxes - Flat Tax Cut.
Regulation- I will fight for less regulation and less fees imposed on business, and support the 2020 ballot issue that requires voter approval for large state programs that are fee based - Vote On Fees.
The Federalist Papers encapsulate all of the finest ideas in political philosophy, as well as detailing all of the thought processes that went into the creation of the premier form of democratic republic on earth. The notions of regionalism, states rights, separation of powers, the role of each branch of government, checks and balances, and protection of natural rights against the tyranny of the majority are all there in the Papers, and form the foundation of my political philosophy.
In my professional career I developed skills in solving difficult technical problems that were very detailed, working cooperatively with others. I believe that these skills translate well to the business of government. As a program manager I needed to listen and understand the issues and problems that a large group of many people struggle with to reach the goal of a completed successful program. I believe that the legislative process is quite similar, and I should be successful in mastering that process because of that experience.
I don't believe that previous experience in government or politics is required. The quality of your message and positions should determine your electability, not how long you have been in politics. The government is best when there is a diversity of background and opinion, and fresh ideas tend to come from those with the least experience. The wisdom of experienced legislators is also valuable, and the mixture of both is going to create the best outcome.
Population growth and water resources are the greatest challenges. Population growth requires development and development does not pay for itself, so planning is required to make sure that Colorado stays beautiful as it supports more citizens partaking in the prosperity. Water in states like Colorado is a precious finite resource that needs conserving and careful planning to manage the increasing needs of residents, along with the needs of a vigorous agricultural economy.
The relationship between the governor and the state legislature should be aligned with the principle of checks and balances, and separation of powers, that is fundamental to a democratic republic. Frankly, the best outcomes tend to come when the governor and the legislature majority are from different parties, thereby preventing a tyranny of the majority to manifest itself in extreme legislation in either direction of the political spectrum.
