Description
Ethanol, also called alcohol, ethyl alcohol, and drinking alcohol, is the principal type of alcohol found in alcoholic beverages. It is a volatile, flammable, colorless liquid with a slight characteristic odor. Its chemical formula is C2H6O, which can be written also as CH3−CH2−OH or C2H5−OH (an ethyl group linked to a hydroxyl group), and is often abbreviated as EtOH.
Ethanol is mostly produced by the fermentation of sugars by yeasts or by petrochemical processes. It is an addictive psychoactive drug(indeed one of the oldest and most common recreational drugs), causing a characteristic intoxication (“drunkenness”) and neurotoxicitywhen consumed in sufficient quantities. It is widely used as a solvent, as fuel, and as a feedstock for synthesis of other chemicals, as well as in many other minor uses
Alcohol was brewed as early as 7000-6650 BCE in northen China. Beer was likely brewed from barley as early as the sixth century BCE in Egypt. Pliny the Elder wrote about the golden age of winemaking in Rome, the second century BCE, when vineyards were planted.
Ethanol is miscible with water and is a good general purpose solvent. It is found in paints, tinctures, markers, and personal care products such as mouthwashes, perfumes and deodorants. However, polysaccharides precipitate from aqueous solution in the presence of alcohol, and ethanol precipitation is used for this reason in the purification of DNA and RNA.
