Anime: Ajin OAD

Three very much separate parts:

1: Shinya backstory; some interesting world-building, good watch.

2: Fills in some holes, but nothing important, spoilers some of s2 if you watch it in between seasons.

3: Satou backstory; I hoped it would delve into the history of the Ajin and the world a little more, but it's very skippable.

Pretty uneven as a whole and not nearly as good as the main series but still recommended at least once.

Fills some gaps in the story line so it's definitely worth watching, if you enjoyed the series.

For lovers of the Ajin series, these episodes provide background and round out existing characters. They would be hard to follow without having seen at least the first series. I saw only eps 1 and 2 of OAD; could not find ep 3 or I would have watched it, too, definitely.

The underwhelming ep 1 showcases an Ajin who is only briefly mentioned in the series, the "flood" guy.

Ep 2, “Intermission”, is charming, and divided into chapters. Chapters 1 and 2 were the best, something like kyogen-meets-The Honeymooners; they feel like live theatre. Chapter 2 is darkly and memorably funny, with Tanaka-kun more and more resembling Kaiji (zawa zawa). The remaining chapters were good, but not standouts like chapter 2.

Ep 2 cements one’s acceptance of the characters—eccentric, lovable beings, all deserving of a place in this unfolding world.

Recommend that fans watch episode 3. It's Satou's back story starting from the Africa mission to his arrival in Japan. No way to describe what happens without taking away the experience of an entire episode from Satou's twisted perspective.
