1901 to 2000
Events
  • 1901
    Wycombe High School was established.
  • 1904
    The Town Hall, in Queen Victoria Road, was built.
  • 1906
    The Great Western and Great Central Joint Railway line, which connected London with lines to the north, was opened through High Wycombe.
  • 1920s
    A slum clearance scheme was undertaken by the council and new housing estates created.
  • 1938
    RAF High Wycombe was established.
  • 1940
    RAF High Wycombe became the headquarters for Bomber Command during World War II. It retained this position until 1968.
  • 1942-45
    The United States' 8th Air Force Bomber Command was based at High Wycombe during World War II.
  • 1949
    Hughenden Manor, the residence of PM Benjamin Disraeli between 1848 and 1881, was given to the National Trust.
  • 1960s
    The furniture industry greatly declined.
  • 1975
    Buckinghamshire College of Higher Education was formed by a merger of the High Wycombe College of Art and Technology and Newland Park College of Education.
  • 1990
    Adams Park, home to Wycombe Wanderers Football Club, was opened.
  • 1991
    The population of High Wycombe according to the census was 71,700.
  • 1992
    The Wycombe Swan theatre was opened in November.
  • 1993
    The remaining ruins of the 12th century Hospital of St John the Baptist were declared an English national monument by English Heritage.
  • 1994
    The Wycombe Summit, dry ski slope, was opened.
  • 1999
    Buckinghamshire College of Higher Education became a university college. It was granted full university status in 2007.
