Babel
[edit]Babel lets you view and edit more than one language on Wikidata. Just add e.g. {{#babel:de-N|en-3|es-1|fr-2|nl-3|it-4|da-0}} to your user page. With the same language codes you can add links to your userpage on Wikipedia e.g. de:User:User123. --Tobias1984 (talk) 16:09, 24 August 2013 (UTC)
Friese links
[edit]Ken je dit overzicht? Wat verouderd, maar misschien heb je er wat aan. Ik heb tot ongeveer regel 310 doorgenomen, dus die moeite kun je je besparen. Groet, Lymantria (talk) 06:42, 17 January 2014 (UTC)
Merging items
[edit]Hallo Ieneach fan 'e Esk,
For merging items, you may want to use the merge.js gadget from help page about merging. It has an option "Request deletion for extra items on RfD" to automatically place a request to delete the empytied page. This way of nominating makes it a lot easier for the admins to process the requests.

Don't merge different entries
[edit]Hi,
Please, don't merge différent entries. For example, you have made a merge between :
- Q163500 : the entry about homonymy wikipedia page about a military rank in many navies
- Q23393948 : the specific case of kapitein-ter-zee in dutch navy.

Translation request
[edit]Hello.
Can you translate and upload en:Baku Zoo and en:Baku State University in West Frisian Wikipedia?
Yours sincerely, Sarvathi (talk) 13:11, 17 June 2019 (UTC)
- Hello, Sarvathi. I appreciate your trying to spread knowledge about Azerbaijan, but I'm afraid I just don't have the time to translate these articles into Western Frisian. We're a very small Wikipedia with only a handful of active users, and, quite frankly, I think there are articles which have much more priority. Take for example our page on Baku, which is really short. Before I wrote an article on a zoo or a university in Baku, I think we need to extend our article on the city they're in. And there are lots of articles in our Wikipedia just like the one on Baku. So, sorry, but I can't help you. Ieneach fan 'e Esk (talk) 19:01, 17 June 2019 (UTC)
- Hello. Thank you for your reply. I totally understand you. I apologize. I should have thought about that. My request is indeed a "luxury" for small Wikipedias with few users whose priorities are of course to develop and expand general articles. Providing an encyclopedia for languages spoken by fewer people is the nicest thing done by Wikipedia, because finding any information in those languages in the internet must be difficult and frustrating. I wish you all the best in your work. Sarvathi (talk) 08:53, 18 June 2019 (UTC)
- Thank you for your understanding, Sarvathi. Ieneach fan 'e Esk (talk) 21:22, 18 June 2019 (UTC)
Haida Gwaii
[edit]Haida Gwaii is the new and sole official name of the islands since 2010. The old name of Queen Charlotte Islands is no longer used. On December 11, 2009, the British Columbia government announced that legislation would be introduced in mid-2010 to officially rename the Queen Charlotte Islands. The legislation received royal assent on June 3, 2010, formalizing the name change. All other Wikipedias, except for two, have renamed the article from the old obsolete name to its new current mame. Why change it back to the former and no longer used name? You should put the old name in Frisian in brackets in the article beside the new name, just like it is done for Mumbai (Bombay), as an example, in Wikipedia. 31.200.20.204 17:01, 5 December 2019 (UTC)
- Canadian legislation has no say in how we speak the Western Frisian language. 'Keninginne Sjarlotte-eilannen' is a known name that people recognise. No one over here has ever heard of the Haida Gwaii. I fully respect the rights of speakers of a minority language to make their own, original toponyms the official place names. Western Frisian is also a minority language and we have the same ongoing process over here. But I don't expect foreigners to use the Frisian name forms when the Dutch names are much better known abroad. It is (or at least should be) quite enough to get recognition foar your own minority language by making its toponyms official. You can not expect people from halfway across the world to change the place names they use (in their own language, for Pete's sake) when they have nothing at all to do with your language struggle. In the Western Frisian article about the islands it clearly says that although the islands are better known as the Queen Charlotte Islands, Haida Gwaii is the official name since 2010. That should be enough. Please refrain from telling us how we should speak and write our own language. 'Haida Gwaii' is not a Frisian name form, in fact I wouldn't even know how to pronounce it properly. 'Keninginne Sjarlotte-eilannen', on the other hand, is a Frisian name. (And just this summer, in a Wikipedia-wide vote, we also decided to keep using the well-known name 'Bombay', and not the official but unfamiliar (to us) name 'Mumbai'.) I really don't understand why you have a problem with this. In English you also use forms like Cologne, Rome, Warsaw and Moscow, while the sole official names are Köln, Roma, Warszawa and Moskva. Ieneach fan 'e Esk (talk) 17:26, 5 December 2019 (UTC)
- Fair enough. You have explained your view well. I rest my case. Language/minority rights/place names is a highly charged near-civil war issue in Canada (similar to Belgium) as you may well be aware. For example, when location names are written with a former name and/or in the "wrong language" on a letter, they are even sent back. That does indeed happen in my homeland Canada and in Belgium where I lived. Hence, my emotional reaction in the Haida Gwaii Wikidata page and in your user talk page. 31.200.20.204 18:17, 5 December 2019 (UTC)
- Thank you for explaining the motivation behind your actions. It helped me to understand you better. Like I said, here in Friesland we also have an ongoing process (on and off since 1989) in changing the official toponyms from Dutch to Western Frisian forms, but it's never got as heated as what you describe.
