The final shot of a film presents a challenge for filmmakers. How does one satisfactorily put a cap on a movie? Do you resolve all questions with a happy ending, or do you suggest that the world of the film will continue on?

To see how some of cinema's best handled those questions and more, Tumblr blog "The Final Image" has compiled a five-minute supercut that puts together the final shots of all 86 Best Picture winners, starting with 12 Years a Slave. Many are jubilant — there are lots of joyful embraces here — while others are contemplative or plaintive. The video's also a wonderful look at how styles have changes over the years, and if you're a true film buff you should be able to recognize a couple dozen of these films.
