Shouting down refers to the act of preventing someone from speaking by creating a loud and aggressive environment. There are several synonyms for this term that can be used to convey the same meaning but in different ways. These include, but are not limited to, interrupting, talking over, drowning out, silencing, hushing up, and stifling. Each of these terms describes a different type of verbal interference that can disrupt a conversation or debate. Interrupting refers to cutting someone off mid-sentence, talking over involves speaking louder than someone else to drown out their voice, and drowning out refers to making so much noise that the other person's words cannot be heard. Similarly, silencing, hushing up, and stifling all suggest an attempt to quash opposing views by suppressing them.
