Robert Maurice Alers Hankey, 2nd Baron Hankey was born on 4 July 1905.1 He was the son of Maurice Pascal Alers Hankey, 1st Baron Hankey and Adeline Hermine Gertrude Ernestine de Smidt.2 He married, firstly, Frances Bevyl Stuart-Menteth, daughter of Walter Erskine Stuart-Menteth and Violet Grace Lafone, on 27 September 1930.1 He married, secondly, Joanna Riddall Wright, daughter of Reverend James Johnston Wright, on 2 October 1962.1 He married, thirdly, Aline Stephanie Paulet King, daughter of Brigadier Percy Paulet King and Grace Beatrice Bridgland, in 1992.1 He died on 28 October 1996 at age 91.1
He was educated at Rugby School, Rugby, Warwickshire, EnglandG.1 He graduated from New College, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, EnglandG, in 1926 with a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.)1 He was with the Diplomatic Service between 1927 and 1965.1 He was appointed Companion, Order of St. Michael and St. George (C.M.G.) in 1947.1 He held the office of Minister to Hungary between 1951 and 1953.1 He held the office of Ambassador to Sweden between 1954 and 1960.1 He was appointed Knight Commander, Order of St. Michael and St. George (K.C.M.G.) in 1955.1 He was appointed Knight Commander, Royal Victorian Order (K.C.V.O.) in 1956.1 He succeeded as the 2nd Baron Hankey, of The Chart, co. Surrey [U.K., 1939] on 25 January 1963.1
