Jane Elizabeth Baxter was the daughter of Edward Baxter and Euphemia Wilson.1 She married George Armitstead, 1st and last Baron Armitstead, son of George Armitstead and Emma Jacobs, in 1848.1 She died on 6 January 1913 at Castle Huntly, Longforgan, Perthshire, ScotlandG.1 She was buried on 9 January 1913.1
From 1848, her married name became Armitstead.1 After her marriage, Jane Elizabeth Baxter was styled as Baroness Armitstead on 19 July 1906.

Arnold & Sons, stockbrokers between 1900 and 1921.1 He was a member of the Manchester Stock Exchange between 1904 and 1922.1 In 1910 he contested the Holderness Division of the the East Riding of Yorkshire for the Liberals.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Liberal) for the West Riding of Yorkshire, Holmfirth Division between 1912 and 1918.1 He held the office of Parliamentary Private Secretary in 1914, to the President of the Board of Education.1 He held the office of Financial Secretary of the Treasury in 1914.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Liberal) for the West Riding of Yorkshire, Penistone Division between 1918 and 1921.1 He held the office of Paymaster-General between 1919 and 1931.1 In 1922 he joined the Labour Party.1 He held the office of Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Colonial Office in 1924.1 He was created 1st Baron Arnold, of Hale, co. Chester [U.K.] on 12 February 1924.1 In 1938 he resigned from the Labour Party.1
