KUWAIT, Nov 25 (KUNA) -- Living up to its UN-bestowed status as an International Humanitarian Center, Kuwait continued to aid needy people throughout the week in several countries across the globe. Starting from Yemen's Sanaa, State of Kuwait set up a camp in the city for eye surgeries for people unable to afford such operations. The camp is part of Kuwait's contributions to the health sector in conflict-ridden country. Doctors in the camp, held within Kuwait Medical Center, began operations by conducting 45 surgeries out of 122, "Kuwait By Your Side" campaign said in a statement. The doctors examined 1,000 patients and agreed that 122 cases required surgeries, it added. It added that the campaign continue its health projects nationwide, worth USD 53 million. The campaign is active in sectors of food, water, education, shelter and health. In Iraq, Kuwait Red Crescent Society (KRCS), in cooperation with Iraqi Red Crescent (IRC), started Monday distributing humanitarian supplies to people in Iraq's Halabja and Sulaiymaniah governorates who suffered from a deadly earthquake recently. "KRC have been following latest updates related to the earthquake which hit both Iraq and Iran on November 12 and resulted in huge losses in human lives and infrastructure", said Chairman of KRCS Dr. Hilal Al-Sayer. Dr. Al-Sayer added that more than 3,000 item of food and cleaning supplies were distributed, assuring more shipments are on the way to reach all needy people. He praised cooperative efforts between Kuwait embassy in Baghdad and IRC to facilitate the delivery humanitarian supplies to people in the affected areas. Al-Sayer clarified that KRCS was deeply sympathize with the difficult situation there; this concern reflected the humanitarian responsibility of the KRCS towards the peoples subjected to the human disasters. Al-Sayer noted that Kuwait has always been a pioneer in helping all needy people around the world. In New York, Kuwait announced that His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah ordered the donation of USD one million to be delivered to victims of Hurricanes Irma and Maria, which hit the Caribbean Sea region back in September. This announcement was delivered by Kuwait's Permanent Delegate to the UN Headquarters in New York Ambassador Mansour Al-Otaibi to the donor's conference for the reconstruction states within the Caribbean Sea region. Ambassador Al-Otaibi said that Kuwait was always eager to provide a helping hand to those affected by natural disasters worldwide, affirming that the donation was handed in directly to the hurricanes-devastated countries, as a result of the conference. The Kuwaiti diplomat conveyed his country's sincere wishes of recovery for those inflicted by the disasters, adding that such circumstances required world countries to band together for the sake of those affected by the hurricanes. In Gaza, a sum of USD 1.7 million, part of the USD 200 million Kuwaiti donation aimed at the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip, was delivered to the authorities, the Palestinian government said on Wednesday. Palestinian Minister of Public Works and Housing Mufeed Hasayneh said that the new batch would be used to reconstruct Gaza's industrial facilities. Hasayneh thanked Kuwait for this generous donation, which reflected the strong ties linking Palestinians and Kuwaitis. In November of 2014, Kuwait pledged USD 200 million as part the USD 5.4 billion donation made at Cairo's donors conference for the Gaza Strip. On another front, Kuwait Embassy has opened more water wells in a number of schools in Tanzania, bringing the total number of wells to 60 wells since the launch of the embassy initiative, entitled "a well in every school". In a statement to KUNA, Kuwaiti embassy in Dar Al-Salam, Kuwait Ambassador to Tanzania Jassem Al-Najem said that six water wells were inaugurated at one time in Tanga coastal city, 400 kilometers north of the capital. The six wells were built by Kuwaiti Direct Aid Society and in the presence of Tanga Office Director Ahmad Fathi, Al-Najed said, adding the wells contribute effectively to alleviate the problems of water shortage and increase the number of students to nearby schools.
