Waiting for VW.

CYPRIOT authorities are waiting on manufacturers Volkswagen (VW) for more information as to which cars are installed with faulty emissions-reporting software, the Competition and Consumer Protection Service said on Thursday.

VW were expected to release a new statement on Friday, a service official said.

"We are expecting to be briefed as to which cars are affected, the number of consumers who have purchased these cars, and what solution the company will provide consumers," Emilia Papachristodoulou told the Cyprus News Agency.

Cyprus would enforce any subsequent actions decided by the European Commission, she said, adding that authorities here are "closely monitoring" the issue.

Papachristodoulou said they are in touch with the local VW dealers, who are still unsure what models or series of cars are affected.

The German automobile manufacturer admitted on Tuesday that a software installed in cars running on EA 189 diesel motor could help cheat emissions tests in the United States. As a result, VW could be facing up to $18bn in fines from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency alone.

Earlier, Unicars, the VW dealers in Cyprus, said that diesel cars sold by the company run on a different type of diesel motor.

Soteris Kolettas, director of the department of road transport told the state broadcaster that any affected cars would be identified by a serial number on the chassis.

"More important than whether we have any such cars in Cyprus, is what action can be taken to ensure they comply with emissions standards," he said.

Unicars said that replacing the software in question was a likely scenario, but this had to be confirmed by VW.
