Pheasant shooting's new victim.

SHOOTING has been halted at a university site where 57,000 pheasants have been released in the past six years.

A shooting lease at Gregynog Hall, Newtown, Powys, has not been renewed while a review takes place. It lapsed on February 28.

The site, owned by the University of Wales, has been targeted by campaigners from the League Against Cruel Sports (LACS), which has already secured a shooting ban in Wales' public forests.

The charity fears pheasant shooting may restart at Gregynog unless UoW makes robust commitments.

A Freedom of Information request by LACS revealed that, since 2013, 160 native wild animals - including foxes and corvids - have been killed by gamekeepers to preserve the land for shooting parties.
