Unforgiven delivers the next installment of Kate's Fallen series. This title follows fallen angel Cam as he makes a deal with the devil. In the vein of quintessential teen drama, the boy makes a bet that he can get the girl to fall in love with him in two weeks or suffer under Lucifer's rule. The girl, Lilith--the only girl Cam has ever loved--is stuck in a perpetual purgatory. It is a race against time and Lilith's surly attitude and historical hatred to save them both.
Offering a male perspective, Unforgiven may renew an interest in the series (the last title in the series was released in 2012) just in time, as the re-imagining of Twilight from a male perspective has recently hit shelves. The plot moves rather quickly, yet this is in contrast to an overwhelming amount of character development, making the story progression seem a little forced and often too hasty. The strong points lie in Kate's description of Lilith's purgatory and the setting, with beautiful imagery and a creative take including snow globes and a mall food court. Readers who have followed the series from the beginning may enjoy this title, but it may be a hard sell as a stand-alone title. This would be a good purchase for libraries that have an audience with a continued interest in the genre.--K. Malix.
