FALKIRK angler Peter Thomson, of the Sunburst club, reckons he had the Lake of Menteith sussed out for heat nine of the Scottish Club Championships and its parallel competition, the Daily Champion of Champions. He believed that, because of a combination of an earlier very hard fished competition and warm water, Menteith's ample stock of rainbows were going to be a bit wary on the night, and might even have temporarily migrated away from the shallows into the deeps.

So instead of chosing the prime areas to fish, Peter opted to drift right in the middle of the lake. It was a good move, because his catch of five fish was the heaviest bag of the night.

Peter's catch now propels him into the final of the Champion of Champions and also helped his club into the semis of the Scottish Club Championships.

'The fish were right out in the middle in deep water,' said Peter.

'It was about 8.30pm before I got my first, and the rest followed quickly after.

'They were definitely wary, because I had a lot following my flies, but not taking.'

Peter used a slime line and flies like a Doobrie, Diawl Bach and a Booby Cat to get his bag.

Most of the takes were just a couple of feet down and he also dropped a few. The total bag forthe night was 55 trout weighing 110lb 7oz, and the biggest, a nice one of 3lb4oz, was caught by William Fulton.

Every week during the heats, the winning club, winning individual and the captor of the heaviest fish receive a bottle of Glen Garioch Single Highland Malt Whisky, courtesy of Bowmore distillers.

In both finals, anglers will be competing for cash prizes, Glen Garioch and top of the range tackle prizes courtesy of Martin Grantham, of the Angling Centre Stirling.
