Abdulla finally makes it...
A RETIRED Bahraini policeman has finally succeeded in registering to compete in the Central Municipal Council elections, after two failed attempts.But historian and writer Abdulla Khalifa Abdulla Al Ghanem still had a few anxious moments, officials went through his nomination papers with a fine-tooth comb - to ensure there were no more errors.
The 62-year-old turned up in a wheelchair, hoping to be the first to register when nominations opened at the Khalid bin Waleed Boys School in Isa Town on Monday.
But he forgot his CPR card, without which prospective candidates cannot submit their papers.
The next day, he returned with the CPR card and walked into the centre using a walking stick for support, remarking that a troublesome leg was better than the day before.
But then emerged one of the 10 people who had vouched for him did not belong to his area and he had to go off to find someone else.
Mr Al Ghanem returned the following day, accompanied by three supporters who pledged they would vouch for him.
However, election officials were wary and minutely examined every detail in his papers, before accepting his nomination.
The author, who is contesting from Constituency three (Isa Town), has written three books on the history of Bahrain, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia and is a member of the Bahrain Historical and Archeological Society.
He said he wanted to put to good use his experience as a municipalities inspector in the late 1960s and his 31-year stint at the Public Security.
