'Avengers: Endgame' Less Than $75M Away From Surpassing 'Avatar'.
"Avengers: Endgame" fell out of the top five at the box office this weekend, but it's still slowly inching closer to taking the box office crown from "Avatar." The Marvel Studios movie is now less than $75 million from overthrowing James Cameron's alien epic as the highest-earning movie worldwide.
According to Sunday's box office estimates, "Godzilla: King of Monsters" ruled the box office with over $49 million domestically. "Avengers: Endgame" was in sixth place with a mere $7.813 million. That isn't much, but along with the foreign box office, it helped the Marvel superheroes pass the $2.7 billion mark.
"Endgame," which just finished its sixth weekend in theaters, has earned an estimated $2.713 billion worldwide. "Avatar," released in 2009, earned $2.787 billion.
The question remains: can "Avengers" beat "Avatar"?
Though the mammoth Marvel movie seemed to destroy most records in the (https://www.ibtimes.com/how-much-money-did-avengers-endgame-make-box-office-second-weekend-2790036) first few weeks , this one is going to take time. "Avatar" spent 34 weeks in U.S. theaters, earning $749 million domestically. "Avengers: Endgame" has already beat them at the North American box office with $815 million.
However, the comic book adaptation is on a very different box office journey than "Avatar." The space epic was slightly slower but also much steadier. While it didn't hit milestones quite as fast as "Avengers," it never earned under $10 million at the box office in a single weekend domestically until its 13th weekend, according to (https://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?page=weekly&id=avatar.htm) Box Office Mojo . Meanwhile, "Avengers" is under the $10 million mark in its sixth weekend.
Still, the (https://www.ibtimes.com/avengers-endgame-directors-explain-why-spoiler-got-captain-americas-shield-2790224) Russo brothers -directed film is expected to keep earning money at the box office throughout the summer. It'll likely be in theaters until about Labor Day, giving it plenty of time to earn that $74.7 million.
"Spider-Man: Far From Home," out July 2, will also probably give the film a boost. The movie is the first Marvel Cinematic Universe movie to take place after the events of "Endgame," which also featured Tom Holland's web-slinger. The trailer makes it clear that the new Spidey film will directly address the way "Endgame" events changed the world. That'll likely send more than a few Marvel fans back to the theater for another screening.
It is also worth noting that "Avatar" earned its last $38 million in a second theatrical release featuring bonus footage. Marvel Studios could do the same if they really want to break this box office record. Several filmmakers have spoken about (https://www.ibtimes.com/avengers-endgame-deleted-scenes-revealed-2791361) deleted scenes .
Of course, they might not be that competitive since both films share a parent company. "Avatar" was produced by 20th Century Fox, which Disney acquired earlier this year. "Avengers: Endgame" was produced by the Disney-owned Marvel Studios.
