It is an opportunistic pathogen which can cause meningitis, bactermia or both and is a multi-drug resistant organism.1 Acinetobacter species are short Gram negative rods, measuring in size from 1.0 to 2.5um.
These biofilms play an important role in spreading blood stream infections because of their ability to cover the surface of medical devices.3 Acinetobacter species also cause nosocomial pneumonia, skin and soft tissue infections, meningitis, bactermia and urinary tract infections.4
This could be directly due to periodontal pathogens or their products on endothelial cell via transient bactermia or indirectly due to products of the inflammatory response.[2] Also, increased levels of serum tissue plasminogen activator (t-PA) have been related to increased cardiovascular risk.[3] The effect of treatment on tPA has not been reported in the literature.
