Sectoral, open unions such as the Union of Construction Allied Trades and Technicians (UCATT), the NURMTW, the Union of Shop Distributive and Allied Workers (USDAW) and what became the Graphical Paper and Media Union (GPMU) in 1991 - after a merger between the Society of Graphical and Allied Trades (
SOGAT) and the National Graphical Association (NGA) - also suffered considerable membership leakages between 1979 and 1991:55 per cent, 38 per cent, 33 per cent and 15 per cent respectively.
The three unions which were separately involved in disputes at the Stockport Messenger (1983), News International (1986), and P & O Ferries (1988), (respectively the NGA,
SOGAT and NUS) all suffered combined fines and legal costs of the order of 2m [pounds].
The most recent annual membership returns, for 1986 and 1987, show evidence of a "bottoming-out." The rate of decline between 1986 and 1987 was substantially less than that between 1985 and 1986, not only for all TUC affiliates but, notably, for the three largest: the electricians (EETPU), the printers (
SOGAT 82), and the largest teachers' union, the NUT.
The second major union, the Society for Graphical and Allied Trades (
SOGAT), resulted from the merger, dissolution, and remerger of two major unions.
