Short tandem repeat (STR) based genetic diversity and relationship of domestic sheep breeds with primitive wild Punjab Urial sheep (
Ovis vignei punjabiensis).
There are three subspecies of Urial
Ovis vignei distributed in different ecological zones of the country (Shackleton, 1997) viz.
Ladakh urial or shapu (
Ovis vignei vignei) is an endangered wild sheep still occurring in small pockets in certain areas of Gilgit Baltistan (GB) besides Ladakh in India.
Asiatic cheetahs mainly preyed on wild sheep (
Ovis vignei) which composed more than 50% of consumed biomass.
Himalayan ibex (Capra ibex sibirica) Blue sheep (Pseudois nayaur) Astore markhor (Capra falconeri falconeri) Ladakh urial (
Ovis vignei) Marco polo sheep (Ovis ammon polii) and Himalayan musk deer (Moschus chrysogaster) in Gilgit-Baltistan.
Only the mountains, which are less accessible to vehicles, support remnant populations of wild sheep (
Ovis vignei), tahr (Hemitragus jayakari), ibex, and Arabian leopards (Panthera pardus nimr), which stubbornly cling on, are surviving against the odds.
There are caprine species in Pakistan divided in to 7 species and 5 subspecies (Mirza, 1975; Hesse et al., 1977; Roberts, 1997; Chaudhry, 2011) i.e., Western Himalayan goat (Naemorhedus goral); blue sheep (Pseudois nayur nayur); Sind wild goat (Capra aegagrus blythi); Chiltan wild goat (Capra aegagrus chialtnensis); Asiatic or Himalayan ibex (Ibex siberica); flare horned markhor (Capra falconeri falconeri); straight horned markhor (Capra falconeri megaceros); blandford urial (
Ovis vignei blandfordi); Afghan urial (
Ovis vignei cycloceros); Punjab urial (
Ovis vignei punjabiensis); Ladakh urial (
Ovis vignei vignei); Marcopolo sheep (Ovis ammon polii).
Mitochondrial ATP6 and ATP8 Genes Based Molecular Diversity and Phylogenetic Analysis in Punjab Urial (
Ovis vignei punjabiensis).
Ladak hurial (
Ovis vignei vignei) is a threatened wild sheep, vulnerable and listed in the Appendix 1 of Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Fauna and Flora, present in small pockets of northern Pakistan including Chitral district in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan (GB), and in Ladakh (Jammu and Kashmir) in India.
