Nan·jing
(nän′jĭng′) also Nan·king (năn′kĭng′, nän′-) A city of east-central China on the Yangtze River northwest of Shanghai. An imperial capital and an early capital of the Republic of China, it was the site of a massacre by invading Japanese forces in 1937. The city is now the capital of Jiangsu province.
