The High Commissioner said Pakistan is rich in cultural and religious diversity as its population comprises the Christians, Sikhs, Budhists, Hindus, Parsis, Zoroastrians, Bahais, and small portion of the Kalash, Kihals and Jains.

The event titled 'diversity and pluralism in Pakistani media' was organised by the Institute for Research, Advocacy and Development (Irada), where media persons and Christians, Sikhs, Hindus, Bahais and Kalash were in attendance.

Mentioning that there are no exact figures available, the report stated that there are: "500,000 Shiite Jaferi Muslims; 90,000 Armenian Orthodox Christians (of which an estimated 60,000 are citizens and an estimated 30,000 are undocumented immigrants from Armenia); 25,000 Roman Catholics (mostly recent immigrants from Africa and the Philippines); 21,000 Jews; 20,000 Syrian Orthodox Christians (also known as Syriacs or Suriyanis); 15,000 Russian Orthodox Christians (mostly recent immigrants from Russia who hold residence permits); 10,000 Bahais; 5,000 Yezidis; 5,000 Jehovah's Witnesses; 7,000 members of other Protestant denominations; 3,000 Iraqi Chaldean Christians; and up to 2,500 Greek Orthodox Christians" in Turkey.

Rami Bahais, head of the DP Engineering Section, said in a statement received by Al-Eqtisadayah daily that the Riyadh reform centre will be finalised in the next five months.

It is the resting place of a number of prominent Baha'is--including ten Baha'i women whose cruel hanging in 1983 came to symbolize the government's deadly persecution of Bahais.

However, the country's jails are packed with over 800 political prisoners, including journalists, photographers, bloggers, lawyers, human rights activists and Christians and Bahais.
