(ăb-kā′zhə, -zē-ə, -kä′-, äb-) An autonomous republic of northwest Georgia bordering on Russia and the Black Sea. Georgian troops were forced to withdraw from the region in 1993 after a yearlong war with secessionist rebels.

Capital: Sukhumi. Pop: 220 600 (2006 est). Area: 8600 sq km (3320 sq miles). Also called: Abkhaz Autonomous Republic
