Disney has finally found the perfect Prince Eric for their live-action Little Mermaid remake, and no, it's not Harry Styles. According to The Hollywood Reporter, actor Jonah Hauer-King has officially signed on to play Ariel's swashbuckling love interest.
So who is Jonah Hauer-King? He's a London-based actor who has appeared in a few projects, including the BBC adaptation of Little Women, as well as their program World on Fire. According to the Reporter, the final decision came down to Jonah and Krypton star Cameron Cuffe for the role, though Harry Styles's name was bandied about to play the prince. While we may have to wait to see Harry take on another film role, we think that Jonah will be the perfect Prince Eric. He's got the tousled hair, dreamy eyes, and even Eric's signature dimples, so it's easy to see how a mermaid would fall in love with him.
Jonah is the last of the major castings to be announced for the forthcoming remake of the 1989 animated film. He will join Halle Bailey as Ariel, Melissa McCarthy as the sea witch Ursula, Javier Bardem as Ariel's father King Triton, Awkwafina as the voice of the seagull Scuttle, Jacob Tremblay as Ariel's BFF Flounder the fish, and Hamilton star Daveed Diggs as Sebastian the singing crab. Director Rob Marshall, who helmed the Oscar-winning Chicago musical, will translate the movie from animated to live-action, with a few new songs from Hamilton creator and star Lin-Manuel Miranda.
The main cast is now complete, but we still don't know when the movie will start filming; The Hollywood Reporter estimates that the film will begin production in early 2020. Until then, we'll have to satisfy our craving for some underwater romance with the original Little Mermaid, now that Disney+ is live and streaming.
