1. Solve the equation 3𝑥+4 = 52𝑥 , giving your answer correct to 3 significant figures. [3]

2. Solve the inequality |5𝑥 + 2| > |4𝑥 + 3|. [3]

3. The polynomials 𝑓(𝑥) and 𝑔(𝑥) are defined by;


𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑥 3 + 𝑎𝑥 2 + 𝑏 and 𝑔(𝑥) = 𝑥 3 + 𝑏𝑥 2 − 𝑎
where 𝑎 and 𝑏 are constants. It is given that (𝑥 + 2) is a factor of 𝑓(𝑥). It is also given
that, when 𝑔(𝑥) is divided by (𝑥 + 1), the remainder is −18.
(a) Find the values of 𝑎 and 𝑏. [4]
(b) When 𝑎 and 𝑏 have these values find,
i) 𝑓(𝑥) = 0 leaving your answers to 3 significant figures, [3]
ii) the values of 𝑥 for which 𝑔(𝑥) − 𝑓(𝑥) = −10. [3]

(a) Suppose a principal amount of $3 400 is deposited in a bank paying an annual
interest rate of 6,7% compounded quarterly. Find the balance after 6 years. [3]
(b) The cost of a car was $4 500 in 2000. In 2015 it was $9 400.
i. Find 𝑟, the annual growth rate. [2]
ii. Find the cost of the car in 2024. [3]
iii. After when will the cost of the car be $5 400? [3]

5. The complex number 𝑧 is such that, (3 + 4𝑖)𝑧 = −2 − 3𝑖.


(a) Find
i) the modulus of 𝑧, [3]
ii) the argument of 𝑧, [2]
iii) represent 𝑧 on an Argand diagram. [2]
(b) Given that complex number 𝑤 is 𝑖√2.

(a) Express 𝑓(𝑥) in partial fraction. [4]


(b) Hence obtain the expansion of 𝑓(𝑥) in ascending powers of 𝑥, up to and
including the term in 𝑥 2 . [4]

7. The points 𝐴, 𝐵 and 𝐶 have position vectors; 4𝑖 − 9𝑗 − 𝑘, 𝑖 + 3𝑗 + 5𝑘 and


𝜇𝑖 − 𝑗 + 3𝑘 respectively.
(a) Find the unit vector parallel to ⃗⃗⃗⃗⃗

(b) Hence, state the domain and range of 𝑓(𝑥) and 𝑔(𝑥). [3]

(a) The third and fourth terms of a geometric progression are 3 and 9 respectively.

Find the sum to infinity of the progression. [4]


(b) A circle is divided into 5 sectors in such a way that the angles of the sectors are
in arithmetic progression. Given that the angle of the largest sector is 4 times the
angle of the smallest sector, find the angle of the largest sector. [4]

The diagram shows a sector POQ of a circle of radius 10 cm and centre O. Angle POQ is
2.2 radians. QR is an arc of a circle with centre P and POR is a straight line.
(a) Show that the length of PQ is 17.8 cm, correct to 3 significant figures. [2]
(b) Find the perimeter of the shaded region. [4]

11. Two points have coordinates A(5,7) and B(9, −1).


(i) Find the equation of the perpendicular bisector of AB. [3]
The line through C (1, 2) parallel to AB meets the perpendicular bisector of
AB at the point X.
(ii) Find, by calculation, the distance BX. [5]

(c) Show that if a sequence of values given by the iterative formula;

(a) Water is being poured into a cone, with its vertex pointing downwards. This is shown
in the diagram below. The cone is initially empty and water is poured in at a rate of
25cm3 s−1 . Find the rate at which the depth of the liquid is increasing after 30 seconds.

(b) Ink is dropped on to bottling paper forming a circular stain which increases in area at
a rate of 2.5cm2 /s. Find the rate at which the radius is changing when the area of the
stain is 16𝜋cm2 . [5]

(c) A vacuum flask (for keeping drinks hot) is modelled as a closed cylinder in which the
internal radius is 𝑟 cm and the internal height is ℎ cm. The volume of the flask is 1000
𝑐𝑚3 . A flask is most efficient when the total internal surface area, A 𝑐𝑚2 , is a
minimum.
