Christian Lee pulled off a stunning second-round TKO of Shinya Aoki to win the One Championship lightweight title on a night of huge shocks in Singapore.
Angela Lee, the One women’s atomweight champion, was in tears watching her brother celebrate and the Singapore Indoor Stadium was on its feet after Lee beat his idol and teammate with a flurry of punches in the corner of the ring.
The 20-year-old Lee had somehow escaped a deep armbar attempt late in the first round as Aoki looked to close in on what would have been a fifth first-round win in a row.
The 36-year-old Aoki had been on a tear since a 57-second TKO by then-champion Ben Askren in November 2017, culminating in his emotional title triumph against Eduard Folayang in Tokyo.
Aoki asked for the fight against Lee, his friend and teammate after that win, because he wanted to face the hungriest young lion out there.
“Shinya, thank you so much for this opportunity, you are a legend and I am so grateful to have shared the cage with you,” Lee said in his post-fight interview.
