Es wird verstanden, dass 2-Methoxy-4-vinylphenol als antimikrobieller Wirkstoff wirkt, indem es Störungen in der bakteriellen Zellmembran verursacht. Es wird vermutet, dass 2-Methoxy-4-vinylphenol an die Zellmembran bindet, was zu deren Destabilisierung und anschließender Zerstörung führt. Als Folge davon erleidet die Zelle einen Zelltod, da intrazelluläre Komponenten freigesetzt werden.
