Critics Consensus

The Big Lebowski's shaggy dog story won't satisfy everybody, but those who abide will be treated to a rambling succession of comic delights, with Jeff Bridges' laconic performance really tying the movie together.

Jonathan Romney Sight & Sound The Big Lebowski is at once utterly inconsequential and a blow for a cinematic slacker aesthetic. Jun 8, 2023 Full Review Adam Kempenaar Filmspotting 25 years later, the movie where every detail matters and doesn’t matter at all, is as hilarious as ever – and more poignant, man. Rated: 5/5 Mar 23, 2023 Full Review Desson Thomson Washington Post With their inspired, absurdist taste for weird, peculiar Americana, the Coens have defined and mastered their own bizarre subgenre. No one does it like them and, it almost goes without saying, no one does it better. Jan 24, 2023 Full Review Cory Woodroof For the Win (USA Today) It’s just one of the most original films ever made, perhaps the best world the Coens imagined and the one filled with its best characters. Feb 22, 2024 Full Review Mark Jackson Epoch Times Bridge's thespian mastery, via the slacker zeitgeist of our time, converts The Dude's funniest lines into a readily-understood language of everyday desperation. This ultimately begat the religion of Dudeism. Which makes 'Lebowski' an important movie. Alex K. IT WAS ABSOLUTELY AN AMAZING EXPERIENCE!!! THE THEATER WAS FULL OF PEOPLE!!! THE BEST COMEDY EVER!!! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/07/23 Full Review David M A classic and a must-watch at least once a year. First time seeing in a theatre! Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 11/23/22 Full Review Emily A All I have to say for now is that this movie is very funny. The three main characters: Donny, Dude, and Walter are really funny. I love how Dude is always just confused about everything. He just wanted his rug, he just wanted his rug!!! He just wants to live and bowl! But it is funny how he was just involved with everything, all just because of a rug! Also I feel like I recognise some actors in this movie. But I can’t put my finger on who they are, I just saw them from somewhere. Walter is my favorite character while Dude is my favorite character. This duo is so funny. Donny is so out of loop in the conversation. I lowkey relate to Dony because he just wants to be included in the conversation, but always gets pushed around. Also I like how bowling is one of their utmost importance in their life. Between all three, the one that is most passionate is Walter and he takes everything seriously which is really funny. I like how throughout the movie, nobody really listens to Dude, like Dude tries, but no one just doesn't believe him. And it’s funny because Dude is trying to do the right thing, but nothing is coming out good for him. No matter how worse it is getting for Dude, he still makes it to bowling practice. He just enjoys the simple life. I was really surprised that he hasn’t gotten killed or arrested at all, even his friend Walter. Lastly, I love the comebacks that the characters throw at each other. How are they getting away with this? I love this movie, I recommend this to anybody that loves comedy. It is such a good movie, anybody would love it. The chaoticness just draws you in and makes you want to keep on watching it. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/29/24 Full Review Audience Member This was a genuine waste of 2 hours. I understand that the point of the movie is that there is no point, but aside from a few good shots, the writing made it feel like the entire theme of the movie was f**k it. Apparently, there is something to say about each character being a different type of personality, and that the Dude is drifting through it all, but I think that's a stretch to say the least. Almost nothing about the movie was engaging. I checked the progress halfway through, thinking it was almost over because it felt like it took forever and yet got nowhere. I would go as far as to say that the movie "Twilight" has more redeeming qualities. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 11/26/24 Full Review Dr T absolute dog. no idea why anyone with a brain would enjoy this horrible concoction of scenes. i see why its popular in america though Rated 1 out of 5 stars 11/23/24 Full Review Ndia W I actually love this movie. I felt it had so much going on at once. It had great comedic timing in my opinion and it was action packed which kept me entertained. The characters all had amazing personalities which keep you drawn in and make the movie more entertaining. I can see why they call this film a classic, I will most certainly watch this movie again. I found this to be the kind of film that teaches you a lesson and you wouldn’t even expect it too. It has a great soundtrack and I don’t have anything bad to say about it. It’s a 10/10 film that i would watch a million times more. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/15/24 Full Review Read all reviews
