66 architects and architectural firms, respectively, from 13 countries entered the competition with a total of 81 projects and the international judging panel had to evaluate approximately 450 models, drawings, and photographs. The architects had a wide range of options: drawings, watercolors, perspective drawings, sketches and photographs of models or building projects could be submitted. The exhibits for the two competitions “Town Planning” and “Architectural Design” were identical, but were assessed separately for both categories. Two works by Italian architects were shown “hors concours”. All six medals were awarded.
For the competition “Design For Town Planning” the gold medal went to German Alfred Hensel and his work Das Stadion von Nürnberg (The stadium of Nuremberg). In 2004, art historian Bernard Kramer wrote, “His design for the stadium at Nuremberg in the public park on the Zeppelin Field won the favor of the judges because Hensel was able to take advantage of the difficulties of a square basic shape for the benefit of the entire system. The excerpt presented here combined a relatively small area with a variety of sports and recreational facilities.”
Vue perspective du Stade de Versailles (Stadium at Versailles) was submitted by French Jacques Lambert and earned medals in both categories, silver for Town Planning and bronze for architectural designs. The bronze was awarded to German Max Laeuger and his design Entwurf zum Stadtpark Hamburg 1908 (Design of the municipal park in Hamburg from 1908). The chairman of German art participation, Edwin Redslob, wrote in 1928, “If this […] design gets executed, so today the municipal park might be the most beautiful sports complex in Germany.”
