Lindsay Benko was a distance freestyler who also swam some backstroke, and who competed at the 2000 and 2004 Olympic Games. She won three Olympic medals, all in relays, with golds in the 4x200 freestyle relay in 2000 and 2004. She also won golds in both freestyle relays at the 2003 World Championships. Benko was perhaps at her best in short-course, earning 10 medals and 5 golds at the World Short-Course Championships, with golds individually in the 400 freestyle in 2000 and the 200 freestyle and 200 backstroke in 2002. She held the short-course world record in the 400 free (3:59.53) from January 2003 to December 2005.
Benko married Canadian Olympic swimmer Mike Mintenko and professionally later became known as Lindsay Mintenko. After her competitive career Benko-Mintenko had a brief acting career. She later worked for USA Swimming as the national team managing director and in 2017, became the first woman to lead USA Swimming’s National Team Division.
