Belgian architect Louis Stynen received an Honorable Mention at the 1932 Art Competitions in Los Angeles for his work Sports center in the category “Town planning”. He studied architecture from 1926-31 at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerpen, and then until 1933 at the Academy of Fine Arts. During this time, he participated with his Ontwerp for a sports complex in Los Angeles. Stynen was the son of a sculptor and ornamentalist. He designed a number of public buildings such as hospitals and office buildings. He acquired his greatest merits, however, in the restoration of historic buildings and churches, including the Cathedral of Antwerp. He also built new churches and expanded existing ones. In 1952 he designed a modern stadium for today’s K.V. Mechelen.
