Originally an alpine skier, Juli Furtado switched to mountain biking in the late 1980s. She is the only person to win World Championships in both the cross-country (1990) and the downhill (1992). In addition, Furtado claimed three consecutive UCI Mountain Bike World Cups in cross-country (1993-95). She had hoped to finish her career with an Olympic medal in Atlanta 1996, but finished 10th in the inaugural Olympic mountain biking competition. Furtado has also been active on the road, winning the 1989 US road title and competing in that year’s World Championships.
