Identity design for Salt Science - a premium bath soaks brand

THE MISSION

Salt Science approached me to design their brand identity from the ground up. With high-end and clean ingredients, they focus on a science based approach to health and recovery. Positioned for customers that live a healthy and active lifestyle, Salt Science intends to create a premium product in a not so crowded niche.

THE OUTCOME

In order for the consumer to experience a premium health focused brand grounded in science, the graphic solution was based on a study of the geometry of microscopic salt crystals. Not wanting the brand to feel overly sterile and scientific, a calming and soft color palette was introduced to connect the brand with the health and wellness space. The brand conveys a wellness centric mood with its use of a modern and clean geometric typeface paired with simple monoline icons.

Discovering Salt Science’s brand attributes

In the discovery phase of the project, I developed a brand attributes worksheet featuring sliding scales in order to help clearly define the brand. The client helped fill in this document which was then used to help search for imagery in the mood boarding process.

Mood board

Before designing anything, I went through several mood boards iterations with the client in order for us to get on the same page visually.

Logo design concept

The logo concept was developed from a study of the geometric forms created by salt crystals when viewed under a microscope.

Final logotype

The final logotype is an abstraction of a salt crystal, framed by a border that was inspired by the outline that surrounds each element on the periodic table of elements. A sans serif font was chosen to give the brand both a modern and accessible look and feel.

Product packaging design

A set of 3 stand-up pouch packs were designed for the first 3 bath soak formulations. Each formula was targeted for a specific health benefit so it was important to differentiate each product with the use of color. A soft color palette was chosen to connect the brand with the health and wellness space.

Salt Science brand guidelines

Brand guidelines documentation was created as part of the final delivery of the project to the client to ensure that branding would stay consistent once another designer picked up on the project.
