Wow!

Sitting with great surprise to see that this is from Smith. Above all, he seems to me to be a thoroughly comedy director who occasionally makes cautious forays into horror or action. But as an action director he suddenly turns out to be very good, think this is better than his comedy talents.

This film is performed at a high tempo, which actually seems to be mainly divided into phases in which a different genre is always mixed in the film. For example, the beginning is close to a high-school comedy, to later turn into a thriller, and to finally burst into action and madness.

Obviously on a budget, Smith proves to be a bit of a second Uwe Boll to me. Give him a little less budget, a raw setting and some guns and you get a very good result. Now Red State itself is difficult to compare with Boll's rawer films, but oh well, who cares.

The extremely fast pace and remarkably insanely shot action make this Red State quite a strange film that manages to pop very nicely. Wonderfully energetic and enthusiastically portrayed, strong acting and a very fast tempo.

But what is also a bit of the finishing touch is the tone of the film, which is sometimes quite unpredictable, brutal and merciless. Once the madness breaks out, you have no idea who will survive. Smith knows how to come out strong a few times and also provides wonderful entertainment outside of that.

Only the last 10 minutes were a bit on the boring side, especially since everything before that is thrown at the viewer at a fast train pace. But otherwise thoroughly entertained with this genre mix. At least it was the movie of the week for me.

Horny youngsters Caleb [Ralph Garman], Jarod [Kyle Gallner] and Billy-Ray [Nicholas Braun] find a sex date in neighboring Cooper's Dell via a dating app. It turns out to be a trap that makes them fall prey to the cult followers of the Five Point Trinity Church who have been linked to the death of the homosexual Jacob Harlow [Tim Isenman]. While trying to figure out how to outsmart cult leader Abin Cooper [Michael Parks], police led by Joseph Keenan [John Goodman] launch a plan to arrest Cooper and his followers, knowing that Cooper's religious beliefs are just about be as strong as the belief in the Second Amendment. Full of obnoxious characters who can't say a sentence without a curse or swear word and who get what they asked for. Smith has never been subtle, hammering in his critique of religious fundamentalism and US gun laws with a sledgehammer, but forgets to entertain the public. On paper, this is a thriller, but there is nothing to notice, despite the bloody denouement.

I had been looking forward to this movie for years, knowing that Kevin Smith has had some beef with the Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka, Kansas (Fred Phelps and his church are casually mentioned mentioned in the movie). Unfortunately, certain choices made in the film didn't sit well with me. Like the cold blood shooting of Travis and Cheyenne by that ATF agent. Why is that necessary? What purpose does that serve and what is Kevin Smith trying to say with this?! Or for example Joseph Keenan (John Goodman) who, on top of it all, also gets a cool promotion. Ugh. The lack of any sympathetic characters that you can identify with really degrades a movie experience for me, and that's a shame.
Despite the nice roles of John Goodman and especially Stephen Root (NewsRadio = hero!).
It's still a blast of action, that's for sure. 3*
