The Beaver

If you've seen the searingly dark and magnificent HARD CANDY, you may remember that there's a moment at which its protagonist, Hayley (a teenage girl who is about to carry out an atrociously savage act), wonders what would happen if she were caught by the authorities. She jokes that they wouldn't do much to her other than have her do some hours of community service, and she wryly comments that "Jo... read more

"Crazy is being miserable and walking around half asleep, numb, day after day after day. Crazy is pretending to be happy. Pretending that the way things are is the way they have to be for the rest of your bleeding life. All the potential, hope, all that joy, feeling, all that passion that life has sucked out of you. Reach out, grab a hold of it and snatch it back from that bloodsucking rabble."read more

The Beaver is a great and obvious metaphor that unfortunately it sustains even when its argument proves untenable, especially in its 1st act. The narrative begins with the routine of the central character in tatters in an irreversible situation, but behold the beaver's figure is eventually likely to be accepted. The conflicts that would be natural are temporarily ignored and become valid from the ... read more

Description: The Beaver follows the life of depressed toy executive Walter Black (Gibson) who, after being kicked out by his wife, takes on a new persona in which he communicates through a beaver hand puppet. His wife (Foster) and son (Yelchin) are skeptical, but try to accept Walter as a favor to their younger son, who loves the beaver. ... (more)

Movies the giraffe watched in 2017: June (27 movies items)

"First viewing - June 17th Review by PvtCaboose91 After the kiddo went to bed I wanted to watch something & wound up choosing The Beaver. I've seen mostly positive feedback on it and will gladly add my name to that list. Mel Gibson gives one of his best performances here, and the film had some surprises along the way. The above review pretty much nails my thoughts on other things, for those who prefer a more in-depth look. Currently streaming on Netflix"

BradWesley123's Movie Journal- May 2016 (34 movies items)

" Tubi TV- 1hr. 31min. First Viewing The Beaver is an odd movie. It starts out looking like it's going to be a movie about a sad-sack finally understanding how to be a part of his family, but morphs into a film about depression and father-son relationships. While it never spirals tonally, that narrative flip is a bit jarring. It only marginally takes away from the quality, but the film's story and performances are strong enough to overcome it. Gibson does strong work as the lead, hitting all of t"

"April 9 "Good afternoon, graduates, dead poets, painters, future Einsteins, and all those in between. Today I'm here to warn you, that you are being lied to. Our parents, our teachers, our doctors, have lied to us. And it's the exact same lie. The same six words, "Everything is going to be okay." This movie was something that I thought sounded weird and not in a good way judging from what I've heard about it and honestly after seeing it I feel the same way about this premise as I did before."

"21.2.2016 Mel Gibson sekoaa, alkaa puhua käsinukkemajavalla ja oppii elämästä lopussa. Eräässä kohdassa hän katsoi Kung Fua telkkarista. Se on tämän elokuvan tärkein ja merkittävän saavutus."
