A gifted child, Fred Tate (Adam Hann-Byrd) has some social difficulties mainly because he understands things that a child normally does not. His pragmatic mother Dede (Jodie Foster) is torn between wanting his gifts to develop and not making him feel isolated or strange. As it t... read more

Not so long ago, I saw 'The Beaver', the latest directing effort delivered by Jodie Foster. Even though I did like it, it was certainly a really risky project, not only because of the subject matter, but also because it was dealing with a man having a mental breakdown and this man happened to be played by Mel Gibson. So, it was risky and it didn't get much love when it was released which is too ba... read more

The story of the intellectually-gifted eight-year-old Fred Tate, his mother Dede and the director of a program for gifted children, Dr Jane Grierson. It explores the tension between Fred's emotional and intellectual needs and between his mother and Dr Grierson.

" Little Man Tate is a 1991 American drama film directed by Jodie Foster (in her directorial debut) from a screenplay written by Scott Frank. The film stars Adam Hann-Byrd as Fred Tate, a seven-year-old child prodigy who struggles to self-actualize in social and psychological settings that largely fail to accommodate his intelligence. It also stars Foster, Dianne Wiest, Harry Connick Jr., David Hyde Pierce, Debi Mazar and P.J. Ochlan. Little Man Tate was released theatrically on October 18,"

30 From 91: My Favorite Films From 1991 (30 movies items)

"Little Man Tate is Jody Foster's directorial debut about a mom (Foster) who is trying to raise her intellectually advanced child (some kid named Byrd) with as normal a childhood as possible but with enough support to allow his "gift" to actualize. This is something that my mother never had to worry about when I was growing up. As a matter of fact, it was the opposite since her main concern about me was how much time I tended to lie around and waste time. Which is something I obviously never gre"

Moviewatcher122's 2016 Film Diary: June (26 movies items)

"June 22 "You're crabby today." "I'm not crabby, I'm pensive." This was a decent directorial debut for Jodie Foster and it's a much better effort than The Beaver. The story isn't the most original, but it works. The performances of the cast members here do the best with the material they are given and the script is decently written even though it has a couple instances of awkward dialogue. It's not something I'd go out of my way to watch again, but I liked it and it's something I wouldn't hes"
