My Queen! My wife. My love...
Posted : 14 years, 9 months ago on 20 February 2010 04:40King Leonidas and a force of 300 men fight the Persians at Thermopylae in 480 B.C..
Gerard Butler: King Leonidas
Visual, artistically flamboyant, action-packed, violently machoistic repetitiveness yet visually stunning and imaginative. This is 300(2006); The film adaptation from Director Zack Snyder, from Frank Miller and
Lynn Varley's graphic novel, loosely based on real events. Truly immense and the scale epic, violence oozes from it. The illusory green screen and effects really, truly shine as being art and believable.
David Wenham's narration is an acquired taste, yet grows on you on numerous viewings in meaningful poetry laden frontiers.
Gerard Butler as King Leonidas was absolutely one with the part he plays. He's such a remarkable versatile actor whom plays such a strong lead. He IS Leonidas.
Lena Headley as Queen Gorgo also such a strong leading woman among such a male dominated cast yet shes formidable and a good enough actress to remain stand out.
Michael Fassbender and Tom wisdom as Stelios and Astinos had witty lines and strong humourous chemistry in the film.
Andrew Tiernan as the hunchback Ephialties also has depth, meaning and a layered personality. The betrayer, the judas of the story whom betrays because he's not accepted, because of his deformed weakness that Spartan's cannot tolerate. Abandoned for this, cast away as is the Spartan way. Traitorous but still one can't help but feel sorry for his plight.
Rodrigo Santoro as Xerxes is so moulded into his character I failed to recognize him on my first viewing years ago. He's an ordinary height in real life and on this he's like a 7ft god-like figure. Really looks the part with all the enigmatic beautiful shrapnel decorating his face and illustrious make up.
''This will not be over quickly. You will not enjoy this. I am not your Queen!''
Fans of ancient history and classical studies will find a lot to criticize because it's not an accurate depiction of ancient Greece but you should always make the legend according to John Ford.
The Spartans don't really come across as real characters from ancient times, more of a crowd of wise cracking macho cyphers. But who the hell cares? This is a Graphic Novel inspired film.
This is a truly memorable movie down to the jaw dropping visuals and it's the visuals and music the film will be rightly remembered for. It's a pity that the Oscar voters ignored 300 because certainly make up, cinematography, editing and possibly best supporting actor for Andrew Tiernan as Ephialtes should have been nominated at least and this film obviously will achieve cult classic status in the future if not now.
Parts I absolutely loved on 300 are numerous, including a love scene with Butler and Headley, utterly blossoming with passion, their last night of intimacy, for love, a bond persevered.
This movie is more than an action movie for me. It's about love, camaraderie, the defending of what they love, of what they believe in. It's about the power not to give up but follow their destiny and to do what they think is the right thing. Plus the fact it's also about the soul-mates; The King and the Queen.
Loved all the battle scenes and great lines:
''Spartans! Ready your breakfast and eat hearty... For tonight, we dine in hell!''
or '' Give them NOTHING! Take from them EVERYTHING!''. ''They look thirsty, let's give them a drink!'', ''Feast hearty men for tonight we dine in HELL!'', I love the reversal here Queen Gorgo says to that black-hearted traitor Theron while skewering him,''This will not be over quickly. You will not enjoy this. I am not your Queen.'' The line I love the most and thats so lovely and makes me think of love eternal, ''My Queen! My wife. My love...'' It's so heart-felt and so loving and touches my soul, I cannot help but become emotional from seeing this everytime.
The story was great and the segment as you arrive at the closing credits with the sound still roaring and pounding gives one a real surge of vibrancy and energy.
For me personally 300 is certainly unique and inspirational. It's a masterpiece utilizing visual effects, colour, sound, soundtrack and the absolutely stunning performance of the cast.
A graphic novel-to film masterpiece. Quality filming, take a bow everyone who made this possible.
''The world will know that free men stood against a tyrant, that few stood against many, and before this battle was over, even a god-king can bleed.''

Great graphic novel adaptation!
Posted : 14 years, 11 months ago on 2 January 2010 12:15Gerard Butler made a very good King Leonidas but one thing that did slightly annoy me about him in it was his voice. You can't tell it is Gerard Butler in this film. If you see him in films like P.S. I Love You, RocknRolla or Phantom O The Opera then you definitely can. He was awesome in the action scenes but because he was in it, he made Leonidas a heartthrob that instantly catches women's attention as well as being an action hero. This film isn't just filled with violence but it has quite a bit of sex and nudity within it especially in the sex scene at the beginning and also what most women would like to see: men in just a pair of pants with six-packs. King Leonidas is the king of the Spartans. They are being invaded by the Persians. He and his 300 soldiers are sent to battle to defend themselves. The odds are against the Spartans because there are millions of Persians.
Zack Snyder directed this film really well in my opinion. His work wasn't really anything major but it was just pure entertainment which is what graphic novels are. Sin City is a serious and entertaining film still because it is such a famous film. The violence used is so cool! The script was ok. I guess, it could have been better but it still was pretty good. I have heard and read better scripts in the past but it is a script of entertainment so that satisfies me.
300 is one of my favourite action films as well as one of my favourite comic book films of all time. 300 is better than Watchmen in every single way! Simple as! 2007 was a great year for action films as well as cinema. Action films like The Bourne Ultimatum, Shoot 'Em Up, 300, Sunshine and Transformers are some of the best films of 2007. It is a kick-ass film that I would watch when I'm in the mood for a kick-ass thrill ride.

Transvestites invade Sparta; Strippers resist!
Posted : 14 years, 12 months ago on 10 December 2009 06:22All the performances in 300 do their job adequately. Many have complained over Dominic West as the storyteller. I thought he did a good job, but when he was on-screen I really didn't buy it. Butler, as I mentioned earlier, has a powerful voice and he makes it show. I wish he didn't shout all the time, but I guess you can't have everything you want. The rest of the nameless male strippers do well, as does the wife of Leonidas, who's performance contains a nice amount of passion towards what she's doing. Santoro does an extremely odd job as the transvestite godking leader of the persians. I don't know what to say about the guy, except that he was one tall motherfucker. Tyler Bates composed the score for 300, and he should definately be considered a noteworthy composer after this. 300 sounds amazing on occasion, but it sounds too good. You see, a good movie score doesn't take away your attention from the movie itself, it enchances it instead. Bates does steal a few scenes here, as unfortunate as it may be. For the majority of the flick, his work is still good.
300 is a pure entertainment movie. Don't try to search, or don't hope, for any deeper meanings from it, and you won't be dissapointed by the astonishing action scenes.

Tonite, We Dine In Hell!
Posted : 15 years, 7 months ago on 16 April 2009 05:58But then Zack Snyder & the writers took Frank Miller's story & used this movie to add a whole different dimension to the telling of this early historic battle. While the story itself suffered a bit because it had to be shorten into a "two-hour" movie ( or however long this thing ran), it seemed to be made up by the surrealist matrix-like effects that were used to enhance the story-telling in a manner such as when an artist uses a new medium for his/her artwork.
In this history epic, I have seen the future of film storytelling.
And it works.

I'm fighting in the shade mate!
Posted : 17 years, 3 months ago on 25 August 2007 08:06There is partial story to the film but it is the visuals and the action that makes me really appreciate this comic-style work.
This movie is masculine enough to fit into the genre of films like Predator, the entire group is just a manly muscle fest which is what recent cinema has been lacking.
Their efforts maybe fruitless but the leadership and valour can't be ignored. After seeing this film, I'd join the Spartans. There is not a real man alive who wouldn't!

Amazing movie !
Posted : 17 years, 7 months ago on 20 April 2007 09:40The cinematography was amazing. Battle scenes the like of which I have not seen on the screen since "Private Ryan".Butler commands the screen in a way I have seldom seen, he deserves at least some consideration for an Oscar. And folks, this was the "warrior ethos" on display. Its what we in the USMC try to instill in our Marines. I've never seen it put better than the words these players speak, and the actions they perform. It tells you "why" we, who volunteer to fight, are what we are, even thousands of years later. All I can say is "Wow". Go see it. You will be entertained! I know I'm going back to see it again, and (if rumours are true) on the IMAX screen if possible.
Unfortunately, the only negative point of this movie is that they made it so different and untrue because of showing the Persian Empire and Xerxes like monsters (Persian Empire and Xerxes were Heroes too), and it lost all the History points. I prepared to watch a movie closer to the History style, and characters should be based on their true appearance (I'm sure Xerxes wasn't that Ugly, and he had beard).
Except the negetive point, they made an amazing movie, and you'll love it. Hope everyone enjoys it.
