300 review

Posted : 2 years, 8 months ago on 27 March 2022 08:11

I was interested in seeing 300. After seeing it, did I like it? Sort of. Starting with the good things, it is visually, technically and stylistically amazing with wonderful costumes and sets. The battle sequences are superbly shot and quite realistic, and the music and acting(the protagonist played by Gerard Butler is very charismatic) are decent, as is the direction. Plus there are some compelling parts in the story, and the script has its moments. However, 300 is not very well paced, in fact for me it was quite slow and pedestrian in places, while there are one two many clichés and stereotypes, one or two them I agree bordered on offensive. Overall, it was an okay film but it didn't wow me. 6/10 Bethany Cox

A good movie

Posted : 12 years, 1 month ago on 6 November 2012 08:42

Even though it was a surprise success at the box-office upon its release, it seems to be nowadays a rather polarizing movie. Indeed, basically, you either love or you hate this flick. Personally, I thought it was pretty good. Indeed, above all I thought it was just visually really impressive. I mean, nowadays, we get a massive overdose of CGI but this movie is a good example that it can definitely enhance the story telling. The Spartans were also pretty awesome, they were totally badass and I thought they were rather believable as some of the deadliest warriors ever. This flick obviously displayed a progression for Zach Znyder from his interesting debut, ‘Dawn of the Dead’, and this progression was confirmed by ‘Watchmen’, his best movie so far which is really underrated in my opinion. Many viewers thought those guys looked really ridiculous in their outfit and, even though they definitely had a point, I thought it fit the ‘historical’ context. Still, even though, I really enjoyed it, I have to admit it was far from being flawless. Indeed, the story was entertaining but rather pedestrian and the political intrigue was really poorly developed (I mean, the bad guy gets killed and look how convenient! He was carrying some enemy coins in his pocket… How corny can you get…) Furthermore, their way of speaking wore me down after a while. I mean, it is like every time they open their mouth, even the most trivial conversation becomes some kind of overblown speech. Still, I thought it was a pretty cool flick and I had a good time watching this. To conclude, even though I’m far from being an action movie fan, I thought this one was really entertaining and I think it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

Holy abs! If anything else, this film was motivating. I think I ran to the gym directly after watching this and pushed myself to the point of passing out. I'm going to say down with those who complain about the historical accuracy of this film. I'm pretty sure that with all of the monsters that they threw at us viewers from the side of Persia, I was considering this film more fantasy than historical by the time it was even a tenth of the way through. That doesn't mean I loved it any less. The soundtrack went perfectly with a bloody, heartpounding, primordial scream kind of battle that almost had me wishing I was Spartan for a while. The part that amazed me most...that Xerxes, ruler of the enemy hoards was that short little Brazilian guy who appeared in Lost for two episodes! How exactly do they make a monster out of him? Between him and the painted on abs on all of those Spartans, I've got to give this movie an eight for the make-up guys alone!

My Queen! My wife. My love...

'' Madness? THIS IS SPARTA!''

King Leonidas and a force of 300 men fight the Persians at Thermopylae in 480 B.C..

Gerard Butler: King Leonidas

Visual, artistically flamboyant, action-packed, violently machoistic repetitiveness yet visually stunning and imaginative. This is 300(2006); The film adaptation from Director Zack Snyder, from Frank Miller and
Lynn Varley's graphic novel, loosely based on real events. Truly immense and the scale epic, violence oozes from it. The illusory green screen and effects really, truly shine as being art and believable.

David Wenham's narration is an acquired taste, yet grows on you on numerous viewings in meaningful poetry laden frontiers.
Gerard Butler as King Leonidas was absolutely one with the part he plays. He's such a remarkable versatile actor whom plays such a strong lead. He IS Leonidas.
Lena Headley as Queen Gorgo also such a strong leading woman among such a male dominated cast yet shes formidable and a good enough actress to remain stand out.
Michael Fassbender and Tom wisdom as Stelios and Astinos had witty lines and strong humourous chemistry in the film.
Andrew Tiernan as the hunchback Ephialties also has depth, meaning and a layered personality. The betrayer, the judas of the story whom betrays because he's not accepted, because of his deformed weakness that Spartan's cannot tolerate. Abandoned for this, cast away as is the Spartan way. Traitorous but still one can't help but feel sorry for his plight.
Rodrigo Santoro as Xerxes is so moulded into his character I failed to recognize him on my first viewing years ago. He's an ordinary height in real life and on this he's like a 7ft god-like figure. Really looks the part with all the enigmatic beautiful shrapnel decorating his face and illustrious make up.

''This will not be over quickly. You will not enjoy this. I am not your Queen!''

Fans of ancient history and classical studies will find a lot to criticize because it's not an accurate depiction of ancient Greece but you should always make the legend according to John Ford.
The Spartans don't really come across as real characters from ancient times, more of a crowd of wise cracking macho cyphers. But who the hell cares? This is a Graphic Novel inspired film.

This is a truly memorable movie down to the jaw dropping visuals and it's the visuals and music the film will be rightly remembered for. It's a pity that the Oscar voters ignored 300 because certainly make up, cinematography, editing and possibly best supporting actor for Andrew Tiernan as Ephialtes should have been nominated at least and this film obviously will achieve cult classic status in the future if not now.

Parts I absolutely loved on 300 are numerous, including a love scene with Butler and Headley, utterly blossoming with passion, their last night of intimacy, for love, a bond persevered.
This movie is more than an action movie for me. It's about love, camaraderie, the defending of what they love, of what they believe in. It's about the power not to give up but follow their destiny and to do what they think is the right thing. Plus the fact it's also about the soul-mates; The King and the Queen.

Loved all the battle scenes and great lines:

''Spartans! Ready your breakfast and eat hearty... For tonight, we dine in hell!''
or '' Give them NOTHING! Take from them EVERYTHING!''. ''They look thirsty, let's give them a drink!'', ''Feast hearty men for tonight we dine in HELL!'', I love the reversal here Queen Gorgo says to that black-hearted traitor Theron while skewering him,''This will not be over quickly. You will not enjoy this. I am not your Queen.'' The line I love the most and thats so lovely and makes me think of love eternal, ''My Queen! My wife. My love...'' It's so heart-felt and so loving and touches my soul, I cannot help but become emotional from seeing this everytime.

The story was great and the segment as you arrive at the closing credits with the sound still roaring and pounding gives one a real surge of vibrancy and energy.
For me personally 300 is certainly unique and inspirational. It's a masterpiece utilizing visual effects, colour, sound, soundtrack and the absolutely stunning performance of the cast.
A graphic novel-to film masterpiece. Quality filming, take a bow everyone who made this possible.

''The world will know that free men stood against a tyrant, that few stood against many, and before this battle was over, even a god-king can bleed.''

Great graphic novel adaptation!

Posted : 14 years, 11 months ago on 2 January 2010 12:15

What I really love about 300 is that it is such a cool film with a lot of graphic comical violence within it. After all, it is a graphic novel and it is meant to be. I really like the beginning of this film but I love the ending! The violence was just absolute kick-ass because it was comically graphic and that is pretty much what sums up 300. 300 has some slow-motion scenes within the action scenes which I think is the complete coolness of the film. 300 became a successful blockbuster but had mixed reviews. I admit that most people rate it really high and love it for its action but I don't just love it for that but also for its story and characters. I also admit that it is very overrated because of the action within it. I seriously don't see why people hate this film. It is just so fun! 300 isn't a serious film but it is just a film of pure entertainment. I don't really see why this is called a science fiction film. The only way it could be is the violence but there isn't any mythical or imaginitive creatures within it at all. At first, I was worried about this film because a graphic novel about history?! I thought "This is going to be ultimate crap!" However, when I watched it, I really enjoyed it. This is a very different kind of graphic novel compared to Sin City. The only thing they have in common is they are both violent films but in their own ways.

Gerard Butler made a very good King Leonidas but one thing that did slightly annoy me about him in it was his voice. You can't tell it is Gerard Butler in this film. If you see him in films like P.S. I Love You, RocknRolla or Phantom O The Opera then you definitely can. He was awesome in the action scenes but because he was in it, he made Leonidas a heartthrob that instantly catches women's attention as well as being an action hero. This film isn't just filled with violence but it has quite a bit of sex and nudity within it especially in the sex scene at the beginning and also what most women would like to see: men in just a pair of pants with six-packs. King Leonidas is the king of the Spartans. They are being invaded by the Persians. He and his 300 soldiers are sent to battle to defend themselves. The odds are against the Spartans because there are millions of Persians.

Zack Snyder directed this film really well in my opinion. His work wasn't really anything major but it was just pure entertainment which is what graphic novels are. Sin City is a serious and entertaining film still because it is such a famous film. The violence used is so cool! The script was ok. I guess, it could have been better but it still was pretty good. I have heard and read better scripts in the past but it is a script of entertainment so that satisfies me.

300 is one of my favourite action films as well as one of my favourite comic book films of all time. 300 is better than Watchmen in every single way! Simple as! 2007 was a great year for action films as well as cinema. Action films like The Bourne Ultimatum, Shoot 'Em Up, 300, Sunshine and Transformers are some of the best films of 2007. It is a kick-ass film that I would watch when I'm in the mood for a kick-ass thrill ride.

Transvestites invade Sparta; Strippers resist!

Posted : 14 years, 12 months ago on 10 December 2009 06:22

Haha. This is one of those movies that never should have happened, atleast according to common sense. The absurdity of 300 is unbelievable. 300 is so crazy and surreal that it's actually good. Here's a movie that acts like it would be serious, but is filled with things that are not possible in any manner. It's awesome to see something like this. Zack Snyder really went all out here when it comes to directorial feats. He is entirely responsible for the fact that this movie is good at all. The visual style that he follows through the entire movie is this weird bronze-like tone, which by all means looks marvellous. Overall, when it comes to visuality, 300 is one of the best movies ever made. I mean any movie that can make half-naked men in thongs look good and cool deserves that right. The fight scenes are definately the best thing in the whole film, and they do work very well. Simply put, they're entertaining to watch. There's nothing more to it. You just enjoy them. The story is somewhat mudane, it's a rather clichéd tale of courage and freedom and such things, but we've heard it all before anyhow. It however is a great excuse to give us Gerald Butler screaming catchy one-liners at the top of his lungs. The man does indeed have a good voice. Most people have complained greatly about the sideplot about Leonidas's wife, calling it too boring. It is boring, yes. But it's also extremely necessary for the movie. Without it, the movie would either be very short, or very boring. It's like a some comedy movies; you hear a joke once, and you laugh your ass off. You hear it again, you laugh again. You hear it the third time, you laught yet again. But if you hear it for over five times, it starts to get dull. Hear if over ten times, it's boring. Hear it over twenty times, you never want to hear it again. But if you insert a few other jokes in between the same joke, you'll laugh at it often. It's the same thing with the action scenes of 300. They would definately get somewhat boring without the sideplot supporting them. With the sideplot you actually have anticipation towards the next scene, until you really just can't wait for it to show up.

All the performances in 300 do their job adequately. Many have complained over Dominic West as the storyteller. I thought he did a good job, but when he was on-screen I really didn't buy it. Butler, as I mentioned earlier, has a powerful voice and he makes it show. I wish he didn't shout all the time, but I guess you can't have everything you want. The rest of the nameless male strippers do well, as does the wife of Leonidas, who's performance contains a nice amount of passion towards what she's doing. Santoro does an extremely odd job as the transvestite godking leader of the persians. I don't know what to say about the guy, except that he was one tall motherfucker. Tyler Bates composed the score for 300, and he should definately be considered a noteworthy composer after this. 300 sounds amazing on occasion, but it sounds too good. You see, a good movie score doesn't take away your attention from the movie itself, it enchances it instead. Bates does steal a few scenes here, as unfortunate as it may be. For the majority of the flick, his work is still good.

300 is a pure entertainment movie. Don't try to search, or don't hope, for any deeper meanings from it, and you won't be dissapointed by the astonishing action scenes.

Tonite, We Dine In Hell!

Posted : 15 years, 7 months ago on 16 April 2009 05:58

I thought that the limited comicbook series was just okay.
But then Zack Snyder & the writers took Frank Miller's story & used this movie to add a whole different dimension to the telling of this early historic battle. While the story itself suffered a bit because it had to be shorten into a "two-hour" movie ( or however long this thing ran), it seemed to be made up by the surrealist matrix-like effects that were used to enhance the story-telling in a manner such as when an artist uses a new medium for his/her artwork.
In this history epic, I have seen the future of film storytelling.
And it works.

I'm fighting in the shade mate!

Posted : 17 years, 3 months ago on 25 August 2007 08:06

I'm a massive fan of the Battle of Thermopylae. There is no greater instance in history where spear and shield meet. Outnumbered and outgunned but never outdone.

There is partial story to the film but it is the visuals and the action that makes me really appreciate this comic-style work.

This movie is masculine enough to fit into the genre of films like Predator, the entire group is just a manly muscle fest which is what recent cinema has been lacking.

Their efforts maybe fruitless but the leadership and valour can't be ignored. After seeing this film, I'd join the Spartans. There is not a real man alive who wouldn't!

Amazing movie !

Posted : 17 years, 7 months ago on 20 April 2007 09:40

Saw the midnight showing, gotta say that it's the best action/epic since Braveheart. Gladiator was more of a character story, but I really liked this even more than Gladiator as a movie. The action scenes were epic and absolutely gorgeous, with loooooooong single-take cuts that really amp up the action in slow-motion.
The cinematography was amazing. Battle scenes the like of which I have not seen on the screen since "Private Ryan".Butler commands the screen in a way I have seldom seen, he deserves at least some consideration for an Oscar. And folks, this was the "warrior ethos" on display. Its what we in the USMC try to instill in our Marines. I've never seen it put better than the words these players speak, and the actions they perform. It tells you "why" we, who volunteer to fight, are what we are, even thousands of years later. All I can say is "Wow". Go see it. You will be entertained! I know I'm going back to see it again, and (if rumours are true) on the IMAX screen if possible.
Unfortunately, the only negative point of this movie is that they made it so different and untrue because of showing the Persian Empire and Xerxes like monsters (Persian Empire and Xerxes were Heroes too), and it lost all the History points. I prepared to watch a movie closer to the History style, and characters should be based on their true appearance (I'm sure Xerxes wasn't that Ugly, and he had beard).
Except the negetive point, they made an amazing movie, and you'll love it. Hope everyone enjoys it.
