Hurlbut, Doctor Philastus
Biography
3 Feb. 1809–16 June 1883. Clergyman, farmer. Born at Chittenden Co., Vermont. “Doctor” was his given name. Preacher for Methodist Episcopal Church in Jamestown, Chautauque Co., New York. Baptized into Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1832/1833, at Jamestown. Ordained an elder by Sidney Rigdon, 18 Mar. 1833. Appointed to serve mission to East with Daniel Copley, 19 Mar. 1833. Excommunicated, June 1833. Married Maria Sheldon Woodbury, 29 Apr. 1834, in Ashtabula Co., Ohio. Employed by citizens of Geauga Co., Ohio, to collect information about Smith family and origin of Book of Mormon. Findings were published in Eber D. Howe’s Mormonism Unvailed, 1834. Arrested for allegedly threatening JS’s life, 1834, and ordered to enter into recognizance to keep the peace. Moved to Gerard Township, Erie Co., Pennsylvania, 1834/1835. With Eber Howe, advanced the Rigdon-Spaulding theory of the origin of the Book of Mormon. Located at Gibsonburg, Sandusky Co., Ohio, 1836/1837. Joined Salem United Brethren Church in Gibsonburg; ordained an elder in that church, ca. 1846. Appointed member of board of trustees of Otterbein College, 1847, in Westerville, Franklin Co., Ohio. Suspended permanently from ministry, 1852. Died at Madison Township, Sandusky Co.
