Kanguva X review: A 'superb' Suriya in a 'weak' fantasy thriller
Suriya's Kanguva impressed the viewers with visuals but struggled with a weak script. Some X users praised the actor's performance, while others criticised the lack of emotional connection.
In Short
- Kanguva starring Suriya releases in theatres
- The film receives mixed reviews: good visuals, weak script
- The second half and climax receive positive feedback
Actor Suriya's highly anticipated fantasy action thriller Kanguva has finally hit theatres. Directed by Siva, the film had early morning shows in Andhra Pradesh and Kerala, and the first reviews have already surfaced on social media. However, the initial reactions from the audience appear to be less than favourable.
A member of the audience who watched Kanguva wrote on X, "Here it is.. #Kanguva first half reportsâæ Suriya's poor acting compared to Soorarai Pottru, Disha unwanted, disappointment with the 3D effect, expectations not satisfied, overhype is not good for the film, keep expectations low, let’s see what Siruthai justifies for it in the second half (sic)."
One X user found Kanguva's script "weak" and shared their review of the film: "A weak script backed up with mind-blowing visuals and excellent VFX. Good performance from Suriya & the small boy. Manippu video song is easily the best part of the movie. 3D is too good. Racy screenplay but failed to impress us. Couldn’t connect with a single scene. Interval twist was decent. Climax fight & cameo were (thumbs up). Underwhelming scenes with loud BGM were drawbacks for this movie. No emotional connect. Overall, a disappointing movie!! Rating: 2.5/5 (sic)."
While the film's script hasn’t lived up to the audience's expectations, actor Suriya has impressed everyone with his performance. One social media user noted, "Suriya superb, especially in the periodic portion. No other character is strong. Makeup, artwork, and fights are good. Loud BGM. Visually stunning with great production values. The historic portion is better than the current. Story is good, narration could have been much better. AVERAGE! (sic)."
However, a viewer enjoyed the second half of the film and wrote on X, "A great experience, especially the second half. It's a banger, and the climax sequence is a blast. The way the connection between past and present is made is great. Thandavam @Suriya_offl love you @directorsiva sir, the emotion connects well @StudioGreen2 overall it's wow #Kanguva (sic)."
Kanguva is a fantasy action-adventure set in the mediaeval period. Suriya stars as a tribal warrior, while Bobby Deol makes his Tamil debut as the main antagonist. Disha Patani plays the female lead.
