Unnao rape case: Kuldeep Singh Sengar convicted for death of victim's father

The judgment, earlier deferred by a Delhi court, was pronounced on March 4, 2020. Out of 11 accused, Kuldeep Singh Sengar and six others have been convicted.

Expelled BJP lawmaker Kuldeep Singh Sengar, convicted last year of raping a minor in Unnao in 2017, has now been held guilty of culpable homicide and criminal conspiracy in her father's death.

The judgment, deferred last week by a Delhi court, was pronounced today. Out of 11 accused, Kuldeep Sengar and six others have been convicted.

Kuldeep Singh Sengar has already been jailed for the "remainder of his natural biological life" in the Unnao rape case.

CASE WAS TRANSFERRED FROM UP TRIAL COURT

The Unnao rape survivor's father died in April 2018 in judicial custody.

On April 3, he and a co-worker of his were returning to their village, Makhi, when they were denied a lift by one Shashi Pratap Singh, leading to an altercation, according to a chargesheet filed in July that year.

Shashi Pratap Singh called his associates. Kuldeep Sengar's brother Atul and others reached the spot and beat up the Unnao victim's father and his co-worker.

They took the father was to a police station. An FIR was lodged against him, and he was arrested.

According to the chargesheet, Kuldeep Sengar was in touch the whole time with the district police superintendent and Makhi police station incharge Ashok Singh Bhadauria. He later talked to the doctor who examined the father.

Charges were framed against Kuldeep Sengar, his brother Atul, the Makhi police station in-charge, Sub-Inspector Kamta Prasad, Constable Amir Khan and six others.

The case was transferred to Delhi from a trial court in Uttar Pradesh on the Supreme Court's directions in August last year.

UNNAO RAPE VICTIM UNDER C.R.P.F PROTECTION

In July last year, a truck rammed into a car the Unnao rape survivor was travelling in with some family members and her lawyer. Two of her aunts died.

She was airlifted from a hospital in Lucknow and brought to AIIMS for better care as she was critical. She's been given accommodation in Delhi and is under CRPF protection.
