Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) chief Sukhbir Badal on Wednesday suffered a minor hairline fracture on his right foot when he met the jathedar of Akal Takht in Amritsar to seek pronouncement of religious punishment. The Akal Takht is the highest political institution of the Sikhs.
On August 30, Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Raghbir Singh declared Badal 'tankhaiya' (guilty of religious misconduct) for "mistakes" committed by the SAD and its government from 2007 to 2017. The jathedar is yet to pronounce 'tankhah' (religious punishment) for Badal.
A picture surfaced showing Badal seated in a wheelchair and his right foot heavily plastered after meeting with the Akal Takht jathedar. Badal was taken to a local hospital for treatment and discharged later.
"SAD informs all concerned that S Sukhbir S Badal suffered a minor hairline fracture of a small bone of his right foot in Amritsar today. Nothing to worry about. With the blessings of Guru Sahib, he is absolutely fine and started for his next destination immediately after treatment at a local hospital. Thanks to all concerned please," party spokesperson Daljit Cheema tweeted.
Badal met the jathedar seeking pronouncing of his punishment for religious misconduct charges. In his request to the Akal Takht, Badal had said that after he was declared 'tankhaiya', he kept himself away from political and social engagements.
"It has been more than two-and-a-half months since I was declared 'tankhaiya' by you. As a humble servant, I have kept myself away from sectarian, political and social engagements, keeping in mind the dignity of Takht Sahib. But today, the Sikh Panth and Punjab are facing huge challenges. At this time, I am unable to help in such dire situations even if I wanted to," he wrote in the letter to the jathedar.
"The functioning of the SAD has been affected. As a humble servant, I again appear before Shri Akal Takht Sahib today and request you to impose any punishment on me and I will follow every command," Badal added.
