NecroVisioN
|
NecroVisioN is a 2009 FPS videogame set in 1916 during World War I. The player takes the role of Simon Bukner, a young American soldier recently recruited into the British Army. In addition to German soldiers, Simon soon finds himself fighting supernatural forces, including vampires, demons, and zombies found in locations varying from the battlefields of World War I to secret laboratories and underground caverns. The main setting is the battle of the Somme, during which a rumor of a mysterious infection has appeared, which causes all people to turn into a zombie-like state. Later, the game takes the player into two new settings; the underground realm of Vampires, and the demonic realm, Hell.
A prequel entitled NecroVisioN: Lost Company was released in 2010. It features Jonas Zimmerman as the protagonist and shows him fighting against demonic invaders during the war, slowly discovering vampire tech. He eventually fights against a powerful golem, who guards the Shadow Hand, but is corrupted by the demonic powers.
Both games have almost identical weapons and graphics, so weapons from both games will be together on this page - with notes about which game is which, of course.
The following weapons appear in the video game NecroVisioN:
Sidearms
Colt M1911
The Colt M1911 is the standard sidearm for the player character. The player character can use two Colt M1911s simultaneously or combine it with the Luger P08 or other weapons. The weapon incorrectly operates in double action, as in many games. In the prequel Lost Company, however, this weapon does not appear in the game and can be obtained only through cheat codes.
Luger P08
The Luger P08 appears as the second pistol in the game. Weaker than the Colt M1911, but the magazine holds 8 rounds. The player can use two Luger pistols simultaneously, or combine it with the Colt M1911 and other one-handed weapons.
Submachine Guns
Bergmann MP 18/I
The Bergmann MP18/I submachine gun is carried by some German soldiers in the game. Like some of the other equipment, the MP18 is actually anachronistic for the 1916 setting.
"Vampire SMG"
Rifles
Lee-Enfield No. 1 Mk. III
The Lee-Enfield No.1 Mk.III is Simon's starting rifle and is carried by other British soldiers. Surprisingly, the reloading is accurate, something seen very rarely in video games. A 10-round magazine reloads via two 5-round stripper clips; the player must have discharged at least five rounds before inserting a single clip and must completely empty the weapon to fully reload it. There are four variants of the SMLE in the game; the basic infantry rifle, a variant with an equipped bayonet, one with a sniper scope, and with rifle grenades.
Mauser Gewehr 1898
The Mauser Gewehr 1898 is the standard-issue rifle carried by in-game German soldiers, just as in real-life WWI. It can attach an 1898/05 bayonet, as well as a scope, and the Karabingranate M1914 Rod Grenades. It cannot be reloaded with stripper clips in-game, instead, the player character inserts one round after another. This could be done in real life, but practically the stripper clips were used whenever possible. It is likely the game developers implemented this so they would not have to program in separate reload animations for scoped and unscoped variants of the rifle since scoped versions would obstruct the use of stripper clips to reload.
Gewehr 98M
The world model of the "Gew 98" is the 98M variant with the post-war tangent-leaf rear sight.
Automatic Rifles
Browning Automatic Rifle
In the prequel Lost Company, the Browning Automatic Rifle appears as a new weapon. Besides the player, it is also used in-game by American tank crews and Scottish soldiers. It is always seen with its leaf sight raised. It should be noted that Zimmerman never pulls the charging handle when reloading. Its appearance is certainly anachronistic because the game is set in 1916. At that time, BAR was probably still in development, because it was not seen as a public demonstration until 1917.
Shotguns
"Vampire Shotgun"
Winchester Model 1897
The Winchester Model 1897 "Trench Gun" is used only by the player. It has a 5-shell magazine. Oddly enough, the shotgun is often found in German trenches and fortifications, despite the Germans attempting to have shotguns banned from use in WWI. The hammer is incorrectly uncocked during use, despite the weapon being single-action only.
Machine Guns
Maxim MG08/15
The Maxim MG08/15 portable machine gun is used by German stormtroopers and has two fire modes; full auto and burst. The player may use two machine guns at once.
Flamethrower
Kleinflammenwerfer M. 15
Some infected German soldiers in Lost Company are armed with flamethrowers that resemble the Austrian Kleinflammenwerfer M. 15 with an extended fuel tank. This weapon is not usable by the player.
Maxim Flamethrower
The Lost Company introduces a new version of the portable MG08/15 with a built-in flamethrower, called "MG08 Flammenwerfen". It is used by the player and enemies.
"Vampire Flamethrower"
Grenades & Explosives
Dynamite
Dynamite is used only by the player which can be placed in various locations and can be used as a throwing weapon.
Mk 2 hand grenade
The Mk 2 hand grenade is referred to its predecessor, the Mk 1 hand grenade, and is usable only by the player.
No. 27 Mk. I Chemical Incendiary Grenade
British No.27 Mk. I Chemical Incendiary Grenade appears in Lost Company as a new weapon, called simply "Gas Grenade" and is used only by the player.
Model 14 Karabingranate
The Karabingranate M1914 Rod Grenades are usable for the Gewehr 98 and incorrectly for the Lee-Enfield No.1 Mk.III. Each of the two rifles has access to up to 15 stick grenades, which can only be used for one rifle at a time. Even though they are the same grenades, they cannot all be used for one rifle type.
Model 16 Stielhandgranate
The standard grenade of the Imperial German Army. The game refers to them as the Model 15 Stielhandgranate, but the in-game grenades look more like the Model 16 with screwcap and a plate mounted on top of the warhead. Oddly enough, it lacks the belt clip which almost makes it look like an anachronistic Model 24 Stielhandgranate.
The grenade model was reused in the 2013 game Deadfall Adventures for booby traps. In addition, the grenade indicator was also adopted in this game.
Geballte Ladung
A powerful bundle of grenades stringed together can be found and used only by the player.
Mounted Weapons
37 mm Puteaux SA 1918
The main gun of the Renault FT is a 37 mm Puteaux SA 1918 single-shot, breech-loading cannon.
5.7 cm Maxim-Nordenfelt
The A7V heavy tank is equipped with a 5.7 cm Maxim-Nordenfelt.
42 cm Škoda L/15 Küstenhaubitze M. 17
Several Austro-Hungarian Škoda 42 cm M1917 Heavy Siege Howitzers in various dimensions can be seen throughout the single-player campaign and on multiplayer maps.
Maxim MG 08/15
The Maxim MG08/15 also appears as a mounted machine gun with typical-for-video games infinite ammunition and can be used by enemies and by the player. It is seen mounted on the A7V heavy tank.
Hotchkiss Mk. I
The Mark IV tank has four mounted Hotchkiss Mk.I machine guns.
Hotchkiss Mle. 1914
The Renault FT light tank appears to be equipped with a Hotchkiss Mle 1914 alongside its Puteaux SA 1918 cannon.
QF 6-pounder 6 cwt Hotchkiss
Two QF 6-pounder 6 cwt Hotchkiss guns are mounted on the Mark IV tank.
Other
A7V Heavy Tank
The German A7V heavy tanks appear in both games, in the form of map decorations and in the form of enemies. Considering that only 20 were ever produced, the main characters of both games end up destroying about half of them single-handedly.
Feldspaten M1898
The in-game shovel is a German Feldspaten M1898 which is wielded by zombies and can be picked up by the player.
M1 Garand
An out-of-time M1 Garand is seen in the ending cutscene of chapter one.
Mark IV Tank
Unusable Mark IV tanks are found in both games. Some have painted Eisernes Kreuz emblems, denoting a captured tank.
Renault FT
Renault FT light tanks are used in Lost Company. It is equipped with both a 37mm gun and an 8mm Hotchkiss machine gun, while the real ones carried only one of these two weapons. The tank in the game looks like the first variant, so it is unclear where the machine gun is actually located.
Seitengewehr 98/05
The Seitengewehr 98/05 bayonet is an available melee weapon usable for the player and zombies.
Trench Club
A Trench Club is available in Lost Company.
"Vampire Launcher"
Webley & Scott No. 1 Mk. III* Signal Pistol
The Webley & Scott No. 1 Mk. III* is introduced in Lost Company as a new weapon. It is used only by the player.
