Best TV Horror Series
It was a strong year for horror on television and fear fans were flush with options, but it was NBC’s prequel series Hannibal that fully embodied the essence of the genre. Director David Slade established a ghoulishly gorgeous aesthetic in the pilot that captured our imagination throughout the season. Hannibal was pulling no punches as far as the gore was concerned, but more importantly, character and story took center stage. The relationship between Mads Mikkelsen’s Dr. Hannibal Lecter and Hugh Dancy’s genius-touched-with-madness profiler Will Graham is as fascinating as the one at the core of Silence of the Lambs; and each man’s portrayal exemplary. This is the Lecter with all the charm, wit and, cunning to remain free, until he encounters the one man who has the tragic ability to think as he does. Hannibal is equal parts psychological thriller, intricate game of cat and mouse, and straight-up bone chilling slasher.
