Oh Timothée Chalamet. He's got a lot going for him. Roles in big-budget films like Wonka lined up. Credits in some of the best films of the past years to boast about (Dune, Bones and All). Brands are desperate to dress him, and he's lucky enough to pick and choose who he wants to wear – Louis Vuitton and Alexander McQueen coming out on top. Timothée Chalamet has also got one of the best heads of hair in the 'biz. No mean feat that.
While he's sported some looks over the years – his bowl cut for The King got some serious social airtime and divided fans across Twitter and Instagram – his best, most recognisable and probably most achievable crown is his scruffy, Just Got Out Of Bed Barnet. The Chalament, IDGAF curly haircut is shaggy, somewhat unkept, grown-out and totally a vibe. The sort of the thing that Mick Jagger rocked out with during the Seventies, and almost as voluminous as the haircut the late George Michael was sporting in the early days of his career.
Joe Mills, the expert barber and owner of Mills Studio, tells us, “This is the ultimate bedhead look. It has been blow-dried and styled but looks like it hasn’t.”
“This works well on thicker, straight hair or if you have a slight wave to your hair. Timothée’s hair is around five or six inches long and has a little length around the back and sides, but most importantly it has had some weight removed from it to give it the texture it needs to work like this.”
Fancy it? Below, Mills gives you a step-by-step guide on how to achieve it (and maintain it).
Step one:
“Shampoo your hair and towel dry. Blast dry your hair to get any excess moisture out, but do not completely dry it.”
Step two:
“Take a tangerine-sized amount of Kevin Murphy Body Builder Volumising Mousse and apply it to all of your hair. Then start to dry your hair – you don’t want to overdo it, so you use your fingers and not a brush. Switch the hair dryer to medium heat and a slower setting and turn your head upside down and literally pull your hair away from the head. You are trying to create volume and that bedhead look.”
Step three:
“Once dry it’s going to look a little mad – it will calm down and settle though! The next stage is to add product, but for it not to look like it has any in. Take a two-pence amount of Baxter Of California's Clay Pomade and rub this into your hands so it practically disappears. Then rub it into the bottom of your hair by your scalp. This will give you hold. Then apply the rest through the ends.”
Step four:
“If you have a slight wave to your hair and have some straighteners you can pull a few pieces (a two-inch square section) and smooth the ends to add to the messy texture.”
Step five:
“If you want a little hold, give it a blast of Kevin Murphy's Doo.Over, as this is a dry product and will look invisible and add more hold.”
Finally...
“If you are used to wearing your hair smarter or flat this will feel a little unusual but this is what this look is all about. There are no real rules – it looks unstructured so have a little fun with it.”
