Phil Porter was a somewhat legendary physician in the field of pediatric cardiac surgery with marvelous skills in his field and a world class jerk! He comes to the Children's Hospital of Biloxi, Mississippi with one intention - to build the cardiac intensive care unit from the ground up. But there are several hurdles like the devastating aftereffects of a hurricane, deprivation of essential staff and resources, and a cardiac surgeon resistant to change. He still devotes his everything for this cause until the job begins to take a toll on his free time, marriage, and health. Working hundred-hour weeks, overcoming the impossible, and facing personal ruin are only the start of what he will face.

A one-of-a-kind story, this is a very interesting and great book based on healthcare services and a human's determination and grit to do good for the society. The title is appropriate, for the protagonist is definitely Burned Out. As we have witnessed the state of the healthcare workers during the time of the pandemic, this book is relatable to those situations. The book also depicts the inner workings of hospitals and how certain things work in the industry.

The book has several terms and situations from the medical field, slightly not understandable to the general audience a few times. In all other parts of the book, it's a page-turner and that too is a lengthy one. The writing is brilliant, raw and elaborate. This is a fictionalized portrayal of the author's own experiences.

An introduction to the author - DEAN MAFAKO, M.D. is an author, physician and clinical professor of pediatrics with more than 15 years of clinical and research experience.
