Thurstaston Recreation Ground Boundary Stones

In 1879 three local landowners tried to enclose Thurstaston Common, but Birkenhead Council objected and requested that the highest part of the Common should be unenclosed and preserved for the benefit of the population. In 1883 the situation was resolved and 45 acres of land known as 'Thurstaston Common Recreation Ground', including Thurstaston Hill, were granted to Birkenhead Council. The three landowners were granted other areas of the common in compensation. A series of numbered boundary stones like this one mark out the 'Thurstaston Recreation Ground Boundary', and other stones with the initials 'BG', mark where the landowner Birkenhead Glegg's property begins. Some stones still have a metal plate with details, and some just have the two holes where the plate used to be.
